Why not compare the ford inline six to the 292/250 chevy?
Or the dodge inlines?

The 300 can take them any day any way.

As far as 5.0 torxs the 302 is the poor baby yes..........

If I had a mudding truck with big old tires and grany gears I would not want a big block to weigh me down.

I wouldent want an anemic stock 300 to slow me down.

Id want a fire breathing 302.

For pulling a trailer no freakin way. Ive drove them with autos, 3.73s, four and five speed sticks.

They need lots of speed to move a load. why didint ford ever put a 302 in the F250?

Why did the 300 go in F800s?

Why was the 300 still the stock motor in 1996 F350?

A F350 usualy has a minimum of 4.11s a gear that would be great with a 302.

I love the 302 for high breathing applications. No, it aint a 8k rice runner!
My old ladys mustang has one I love it.
My buddys old mudding truck had one and it was a great engine in that app.

Ill hook up to any stock 302 F 150 any day (If I aint at work) I live in Wahpeton ND go into sturdavents auto parts and askem for flip.

This is said in respect and love for the 302.

You said you would want a 302 in your truck if it had huge mudders. Why not a 360? Sure, the 302 will rev nicely, but the 360 wouldn't run out of breath quite as quickly. Or a 351 for that matter. For the difference in power, the weight difference isn't that big of a deal.

The 302 and 300 are very close in power, excluding horepower. I'd love to have 45+ more HP in my 300.

Not saying the 302 is a towing machine, but the 302 was put in F250's. I know a guy with a 302/C6 in an F250 he uses all the time on his farm. But, he also has an F150 with a 300-6 with an auto (dunno what transmisison, probably AOD) that he uses as his daily driver.

It's a lot to do with gearing, either way. With my NP435, I could have a 4 banger and still get anything rolling.

My last post was only to indicate the kind of crud that people post.
I realy am a fan of inline six engines. though V8s are great for straight out performance.

360 would be too heavy in my mind for a mudder, 351 would be good.

360 & all FEs are great towing and working motors.

A place for evreything, and Everything in its place.

big_ford_rednek 01-21-2009 04:09 PM

the 351 is a really good motor for a mudder

6CylBill 01-21-2009 05:53 PM

There is 9 cubic inches difference between the two. Surely the weight difference can't be that much? What I'm saying is, wouldn't a 360 produce more power than the 351 and still not be too heavy?

I realize I'm jacking this thread. Sorry:-hijacked

Edit: Ford DID put the 302 in F-250's. It just isn't in the Ford book thingie. The Ford book shows the 300, 351, 460 and the Diesel in the F-250(am I right?), not the 302.
Never did understand that.

big_ford_rednek 01-21-2009 07:07 PM

i like the 351 just because aftermarket parts seem a lot more readily available. atleast around here they are. also alot cheaper. i dont know the difference in the weights between teh 2 exactly

If I'm not mistaken the 360 is the same physical size as the 390, I believe the bore is different, the stroke may be a little shorter too. Either way I know one can take a 360 and make a 390 out of it.

What I'm trying to get at here is the 360-390FE engines are big blocks. Although I haven't seen a 360 in person I have seen a 390, and I can tell you it's a monster compared to my 351 Windsor. I'm sure it weights quite a bit more. Hell I'd trade my 351 for a 390 in a heart beat though.

Well what do I know.

Not much.

Regarding the v8 verses the I6: After doing research for about 3 months about how to increase mpg in my F-250 with a 390, I decided to go with an inline. With some mild machine work, the help of some great guys on this forumn, and some after market goodies, I should have about 260-270 hp. The stock 390 is 260 hp. Not only that, but I am looking to get 50% better mpg.

I have the hp in reserve, plenty of room under the hood, pretty good mpg, and enough torque to pull a baja fishing/camping vacation and my boat over mountains and desert, 18 hours into Baja.

Out with the hog 390, and in with lean torque and economy.

I WANT!! lol what all did you do to get 260hp from an inline and what inline to be exact?

Back to the 300 bashing...

I'd never bash such a great engine, I loved the 300 that use to rest between the fenders of my 82 F100. I bought that truck when I was 15, I literally put it through hell for almost 5 years before it died.

That truck could of been a spokes model for the toughness of the 300 six, c4 auto, and 9 inch rear. I jumper that truck over train tracks, I drove it through corn fields. The only way she'd burn the tires was to put it in neutral, then floor it and slam it in drive. Being a stupid kid I neutral dumped that truck probably a thousand times and it held together.

She ran 240,000 hard miles, and I mean really hard miles, before she started knocking. I drove it another month or so with a rod knocking like crazy. Pulling on the interstate heading to work one day I kicked her in the butt trying to get out infront of a semi and she blew, number 3 rod went through the oil pan. I coasted it to the next exit and did a u-turn, she got me the 20 or so miles back home with a rod stuck through the pan. She was knocking and banging and shaking like hell but she just kept going.

As much as I love my 302, 351, and 460 I don't think any of em could handle the beating that old 300 took.

I have a great deal of love and respect for 300s. but they sure as hell anit no racing engines. I do think its a little funny reading all the threads about people wanting to hop them up hardcore. My stock 1bbl 300 six, with c4 auto and 3.08 gear ran 0-60mph in 19 seconds, as per the stop watch on my phone at the time.

I bought a pretty beatup 84 F150 parts truck with a 300 that I thought I would use to replace my blown motor. The truck also had a c4 and it had a 9inch with 3.73 gears and a locker(that same rearend is in my 86 now) This 300 was a little bit hopped up, had a Offenhauser intake, a holly 500cfm 2bbl, efi exhaust manifolds, msd ignition, and 3 inch exhaust. Even though that engine was very healthy and ran super nice my tired completely stock 351w, w/c6 auto, 3.55s and 180,000 miles, would walk away from it in a drag race. Both trucks were reg cab long box F150s, one being a 84 the other a 86, the 300 had 3.73 gears and the 351 had 3.55s. With my freshly rebuilt 351 being in the shape it is now I'm sure it would absolutely slaughter the modded 6 in a drag race now.

Like I said I really can't help but laugh when I read these threads about people wanting to turbo or add nitrous to there 300s, I have a great deal of respect for those who can pull it off though. I guess I have the mindset that sixes were built to work, and work hard, so its a little weird to me when one is put to use in a different application.

6CylBill 01-22-2009 02:38 AM

That's the way I look at it, Mat. It's a working man's motor, but it's just as happy to run you to the store to pick up milk and eggs for the family. :-X0A6
My stock 300 is good 'nuff for me. Although a little more "get up and boogy!" would be nice.

260 hp ford 300

9.Ford.5:
I wanted to answer your question. Basically, I followed Clifford's Performance guide/suggestion to get 300 hp out of a 300, but decided to take it down a notch so I could stay on regular gas, and because I didn't want a monster.

Rebuild: Head: installed sbc over size valves (194 intake, 170 exhaust, I would have to look it up to get the exact size), ported, new hp rocker studs, Isky hp springs, moly retainers and locks, three angle valve job, new hardened seats, and milled the surface.

Block: bored .030 over, and decked the block to bump the compression.
crank turned and balanced, rods balanced.

Engine componets: 8.5:1 pistons, Isky cam, lifters, pushrods, 2 into 1 header with dual exhaust. Offy intake with a Autolite 4100 4v tricked by Pony carbs, MSD 6a ignition with a TFI coil and a Duraspark dizzy recurved and line bored with extra bushing added.

I should more power than my 390 with a 2v, and get 50% better mpg. But boy did it cost!

Freaksh0w 01-22-2009 06:01 PM

How does it run? What's the low end like now compared to before? And how high can you rev before it runs out of breath? Neat engine, btw.

F-250 restorer 01-22-2009 09:40 PM

instant 20 hp addition

I forgot to mention the Clifford 6=8 polished aluminum valve cover, which, of course, instantly boosts the hp by 20!! at least.
