Tired of the 300 bashing

There are some people in this I-6 forum who seem to see no purpose in giving any significant advice to people asking ligit, stupid, or just sharing some amusing news in regards to their love of the I-6.

They seem only intrested in professing the virtue of the SB chevy, the BB chevy and tear down the 300 owners with our aspirations of greatness.

One of my threads professing reasonable milage out of a slightly built 300, Turned into nothing more than an advocacy hearing on the new gen IV SB chevy.

The same thing happend to Oregon f150's question on how to beat a 350.

You love theese engines so much go join a site dedicated to them if not Please stop dissing on the poor guys who actualy enjoy the engine, ford, and wahtever they want to ask you.............awnser the question reasonably.

Please take the I love chevy stuff and leave. A 16 yearold with a $900 pickup wants help. Not an argument.

A proud sixer.

I'm a 37 yr old, and drive a $900 truck. I added a few hundred in upgrades to it, and really is about the perfect street engine. Idles innocent, power is from idle to about 3600, and reasonable mpg. I can't leave any engine stock, if I can help it. I'll throw my 2 cents on the beat a 350 thread too, I've heard all the negativity before too.

The thing is, some of you think the 300 is a monster torque big block v8 or something. It is a nice engine in it's own right, a good engine for a 1/2 ton truck or some such, but it isn't a v8. I've had one, it was a nice engine, and I liked it, but it wouldn't move my loaded F250. And, it was getting 8mpg. It was overworking. A v8 can work. And if the 300 was, say, 350 or 400ci it may be better, but as it is, it's just not made for it.

and not only that, the 390 in the truck now gets 14mpg, loaded AND pulling a trailer.

An excellent way for you to out do a 350 chevy would be to get a 351 ford.

Well quess what, mate, you didn't have the Correct Gearing, nor did You have it Set-Up for it to BREATH Properly either. That' was the problem!

So why don't you go Play on the FWY w/ your beloved v8's & leave those of hear alone On The INLINE 6 FORUM, that wish to Discuss them & Not bash them.

Just because You had a bad experience & wish to demean them, doesn't mean the rest of us have & will not.

Really?

I hava 92 F250 (3/4 ton) pickup. It has a 300 and 4.10 gears and a 5 speed transmission. Running down the highway I was able to 17 MPG unloaded. I hooked up to a trailer pulling a 93 Taurus with grill and tools etc in the box and averaged 13 MPG.

The 300 has been around a long time. When Ford went from a carb to fuel injection, that really livened up that engine. I don't own one now, but have in the past. It was a carburator engine with a 4 speed, that did pretty darn good for what it was. I'm sure the fuel injected version would do even better.

The thing people need to remember is that it's YOUR TRUCK! You don't need to prove anything to anyone, nor do they need to prove anything to you. If you've got a 300, and you want to mod it and make it run better, then do it. Others that have advice on how to do it, please chime in. If you have nothing positive to say, then keep quiet.

We run into this kind of junk in the diesel forums. Some guys will argue between the V-10 and the PSD's. Fact is, both have their strong points. If you're happy with what you've got, that great. You should also respect others that are happy with what they've got.

Next thing you know they'll be comparing their wife against yours, or their girlfriend against yours, or boyfriend/husband.

It's your truck. Do to it what you want. I hope it turns out better than you hope it does.

The 300 I6 is a good dependable engine that will take years of abuse and still run. It is not designed for speed but low end grunt. If that is what you need it works well. My 84 F150 with the 300 got 18 mpg from Chandler, Az (Phx area) to Montana a few years ago and is still in pristine condition. Take care of it and it will take care of you. If you are hapy with it it matters not what the SB crowd says. Dare to be different!

Not that I load my daily driver like this every day, but last October when it was time to get coal for the winter, I drove 25 miles one way with 2250 lbs on the back up quite a few hills. The hill I live on is so steep there isn't much traffic thay goes by the house! While the suspension didn't like it very much as it is a 95 half ton, short box, the 300 didn't seem to mind at all! I made two of these trips that night. I even met a state cop and all he did was shake his head!
There will always be folks that make themselves feel better by pointing out what they see as faults. You just have to not take it to heart and drive on.

You may not realize it, but this is bashing.

Frankly, I'm tired of 16 year olds with $900 trucks wanting to build the 300 into Pro-stock specs for less than $500. Not to mention the maggot-splattering posts about converting one to squeeze-fire.

I'm just bitter because I wish my truck was worth $900......

spurredon 01-17-2009 08:18 PM

Mine might be worth $900 if it still had 1 1/4 tons of coal in the back!

flipklos 01-17-2009 08:33 PM

Campsprings john had the original intent in his post.

If I met a kid who wanted to dump $500 into his engine I'd help. I still ask stupid questions when I'm indicisive.

Ive put over 12000 pounds on a 300 pulling, it did it. thats with my current carbed engine.

I put 7000 on my EFI 96 300 and it was a dog.

IVe seen every engine do well in certain aspects. Some V8s wouldent stand a chance to a 300. Some will whip the s--t out of it.

What im sick of is comparing it to a 350, 351, 460, 390, 454, 327, 318, 360, 400, or a 302.

Compare it to a slant six or a 292/250 chevy. It'll out pull and outlast.

The advantage of the 300 is its Brutal stubbron durability, its never ever fast about what it does.

The 300 went in F-800s at one time did the 302, 351?

No Instead of arguing help what I said is generaly true she aint no hi-po, shes a go slow.

That where you are incorrect.
As I've stated before here, find the issue of Custom Classic Trucks, I believe it';s the AUG. 02 issue, that has the Article "THE JOY OF SIX".
They took it to CLIFFORD's & had them build a 500HP 300 I-6 that is a Sweet Sleeper.
Father used to build by hand in the early '70s, 300 I6's that consistently turned out 500-600HP for his Drag Racing friends.
So stating they can't be made to run, is showing that some have Never done the reserch & or actually done the work to "Make Six In a Row,Go"!
