Low Sulpher Diesel Fuel
Been wondering about what kind of fuel my 2001 7.3L was designed for.
I know alot of owners run additives to offset for todays ULSF Diesel. I thought the 7.3 was not designed for this....but I recently got a build sheet for my VIN from "the parts guy" Ed, and it states about my truck: "WITH LOW SULPHER DIESEL FUEL CONTENT" can anyone shed any light on the subject? Thanks-RMK |
at the time these motors came out the only diesel avail. was high sulfer... the epa demanded a lower sulfer content so here it is. the 6.4 powerstroke and all new diesels will only run on ultra low sulfer diesel. the epa say the ULSD is safe for all but many will tell you there IS a difference in how the motor runs. i recommend diesel power addatives like diesel kleen grey bottle summer white bottle winter

Yes that is what I thought, but the specific build sheet for my VIN at year 2001 says its made for low sulpher

Ahh LOW sulpher has now became ULTRA LOW sulpher...and at one point it was regular sulpher I assume.

that is correct

Does anyone know where you can get LSD? I know Flyin' J has it on their site, but not all locations still get LSD (none in CO dangit!). But what about Shell, Exxon, etc? I don't want to run off-road fuel (which may still be ULSD possibly) but some good ol' Low Sulfur stuff I'm sure would make her happy!!
|
good question! Also, could you not just add the sulphur back in or add whatever they took out.
|
I think I read or heard somewhere that off-road has a lower sulfer content in it than it used to and by 2010 it would be ULS also. Dont quote me on that though. I drink to much and my memory is not that great. Just dont let the MAN stick your tank and find that stuff! LOL! Unless you decide to pay the taxes on the stuff at the end of the year.

Low sulfur fuel is no longer being made in the US. Their a few place however that you can still find what they consider Low sulfur. Most of the low sulfur that is being sold is either contminated supply of fuel or fuel that was made that did not meet the spec for ULSD. Remember that it only has to have 16ppm to be considered LSD. So if you find LSD that probably what it is. There is no difference between off-road fuel and regular diesel. The only difference is off road is dyed. I recommend fuel additives replace the lubricity that was lost. I recommend Schaeffers Soyshield or Diesel Treat 2000.

Actually off road is high sulfer content.... what it has on the pump down the road.. i understand by 2010 it will all be ULSD
|
High sulfur has not been made since the early 90's.
|
well the pump down the road for off road fuel says HIGH SULFUR CONTENT

adding fuel additives is not necessary but up to the owner. our truck doesnt have the mechanical injection pump. this is important because all the lubricity that everyone talks about only applies to the mechanical contact surfaces that the fuel comes into contact with. if you have an older mechanical injection pump then you should be adding something. strange enough adding new style 2 cycle engine oil is a great and cheap additive.
because of the 7.3l injection system there is no need for a lubricity additive, now if that additive adds cetane to the diesel then it cant hurt, but its not needed in our trucks. just my 2c's cheers |
