Best sounding diesel ever???

Just wondering everyone's opinion on what their favorite diesel engine chatter was. I must say I love the 6.9 but I love the old 350 olds/6.2 diesel sound! I don't like the new Duramax either, nor the Cummins. They sound like a Volvo or Mercedes.
Cheers.

A straight piped 12V or 24V Cummins. The Common Rails just don't have enough noise going on under the hood for me.
With the PSD and the Duramax V8's, I have a hard time telling them apart with aftermarket exhausts on them. They all sound the same to me. If a Dodge goes by, I don't even have to look up to know what it is.

As for big trucks, a BC IV with dual straights has a nice throaty sound. I also like the sound of a big horse Cat with dual 60"x 8"s. Bonus points if they are rattlin' on the jakes about 2100 rpm. I could go on and on though. Two stroke's...

Detroit 12v-71 TTA with straights. oooooooh, squirt!

starmilt 01-02-2009 02:48 AM

I quit a 1000 buck a week job in 79 because of a 1271 with straights and to me in 79 that was a lot of MONEY.

To me the Cummins sounds like it wants to run and keep running. There's no lope to it or hesitation, it just sits there and ruuunns.
I haven't found one I like the sound of better than my Straight-piped IDI turbo under full throttle though.

One thing that sounds cool though is a 5.9L Cummins making anywhere in the triple digits for HP pulling a sled when an intercooler line blows.
I can't explain the sound but if you've ever heard it you'll never forget it.

You can hear the constant drum/growl/whine of the motor and turbo clawing at the ground. Then when the hose goes it doesn't pop like a balloon it kinda makes a ricochetting bullet going end-over-end kind of sound when the driver lets off and the engine winds down.
Usually the grandstands are completely immersed in smoke so you can't see anything but you sure can hear it.

I know a guy who just loves the sound of a 2-stroke Jimmy at the tractor pulls. I gotta admit they sound pretty good throttled out. For me part of it is the pure odd-ball nature of those motors that makes them kinda cool.

im not a huge fan of the old 6.5L chevy diesels but they defiantly have a unique sound, sorta cool. Overall i like the sound of a 6.9L the most.

World record holder for top speed by a desel truck is held by the Phoenix.
Built by R.B. Slagle, Carl Heap and crew from Grants Pass, Oregon. Carl owned a 4wd shop and Slagle's 2 stroke Detroit powered log trucks were well known in western Oregon.

16V-92
4 turbos
2-blowers (not superchargers)
over 5000 hp

The sound over my cheap computer speakers serves little justice to how incredible this thing sounded in person.

GM two strokes. Though the 4-53 in my F250 is actually too loud with straight pipes. Second to a Detroit any older diesel sounds great to me.

mechmagcn 01-02-2009 11:02 PM

My favorite of all time was the straight piped 6-71 N/A in my old service truck!

starmilt 01-02-2009 11:03 PM

All 2 strokes are too loud to listen to all day.

I'm not sure which motor it is, but the ranch I work for has a 4440 sized Ford Tractor from the 70's with a straight pipe and 6'' stack (custom via me after a new hand tore off the original stack). That things sounds amazing at about 1800 rpm with a good hard load behind such as a deep plow or tandem on black clay.
