Chip Keys

Hi, new to the forum, just bought a used 2005 F150 super cab 4.6l 2v

Unfortunately the truck only came with one key and I'm told its a chip key.

The dealer tells me a key is 28 bucks and 65 bucks to program it.
Thats alot of money for one key. I need to get four.

Anyone know of a cheaper way?????????????

chip key

I was driving past a ACE hardware and I saw a sign that they made chip keys guarantted to work, so I stopped in and had one made. Cost me 75.00 dollars a key. 69.99 plus tax.:eek::eek:

Still cheaper than the dealer.

Dont lose those keys..........................

is the key head large, or small??
also, if it is a chip key, you will see a little piece that looks like it was pushed into the plastic head of the key.

home depot has a key kiosk in most odf their stores that does chip keys, amd it is only like $20

X2 on what Tom said. Home Depot is supposedly the place to go. I don't have any chipped keys though so I can't say it will work, but I would try one for $20. If it works go get 3 more made.

HI Truckwrench,

I had an extra key made for my '04. As I remember, the owners manual has instructions on how to program chip keys. You can buy the keys, have them cut, and program them yourself. Up to 8 keys. The info is in my '08 owners manual, page 154-155.

If I may add my $0.02 to this...... I just bought for my wife a slightly used 2008 Edge and it came with only one key. According to the owner's manual, in order to program additional keys, you need to have 2 that are already programmed. This is the same for my 2001 F-150. The procedure is in the owners manual but seeing that you only have 1 key, you are going to have to suck it up and get one from the dealer and have them program it. After that, you can get the keys cut and program them yourself.

Now for the price, I would have loved to pay that for the key I had to get. The Edge has the key fob built right into the head of the key and the total cost with programming was around $220  The key itself was $185. Now I was able to work a deal that we split the cost with the dealer so it only ran $110.

Yup, Tiny is right you need 2 keys to do the programming, I just pulled out my bill from the dealer;

Cut new key and programmed PATS system and reprogrammed the Keyless entry system $90.00

PATS key $29.95

Remote Control System $66.03

Total Cost $185.00 + Tax

One thing that we do have going for us is the fact that the Edge has a key pad on the outside of the door, so if the key does get locked in for some reason at least there is a fighting chance to get in.

Chip keys

Thanks for all the replys,

My truck did not comes with an owners manual either.

I located one on ebay for twenty bucks and I received it today.

Now that I have the info that I need to perform the key coding procedure, I need to obtain a couple more key blanks, I can cut the keys at work.
I work in a diesel shop and we have a key cutting machine.

The price on those Edge keys are unreal.

These new trucks are really something, they sure have come a long way from the days when rear bumpers and spare tires were an option on a new truck.

ok i have some info to add to this... I went to Home Depot on Rte 9 in Woodbridge NJ with the truck and my single key. The chip keys PATS are $59 and with tax two came to $128 and change. The guy there (dennis) has a machine that reads the code in your key and copies that key so your truck thinks its the same key as the one you have.. Both my copies work perfectly. They do take your ID and they make you fill out a form and they come out to your truck and copy the VIN and make sure the keys work so anyway the story is you dont have to go to the dealer and spend the big bucks you can just go to Home Depot.. the guy dennis works at woodbridge and colonia and he was very knowledgeable and got the keys cut right the first shot as good as the factory one i have so if that helps anyone out...
