Tire Advice
I need advice on which tire to choose from....
I live in So Cal and drive in the snow three or four times a year...I currently have the 4x4 limited EL with 20 inch Pirelli Scorpion STR which performed poorly last time I was in the snow .... which tire from the choices below will work better in the Snow but won't hurt my smooth ride on dry roads? 275/55/20 Pirelli Scorpion ATR Tires 275/55/20 Cooper Discoverer H/T Plus 275/55/20 Goodyear Fierce ST 275/55/20 FALKEN ZIEX S/TZ 04 |
Consumer reports check-marked the ATRs as a good all around tire that is also for off-road. It did well in snow, and was quiet, did well in wet and dry.

After further investigation I think I like the Goodyear Silent Armour better than those....

We just had a lot of snow and ice here in Portland and my Goodyear Silent Armour's were great! They are very quiet on the road and have a more aggressive look than the stock Pirelli's. These tires have the severe service emblem and they chew up snow and ice.

Its not on your list but how about Michelin LTX M/S. I used the tires all year long in Michigan. Had the hot summers, cold winter, spring and fall and they worked fine. Very quite tire and I got 73,000 miles out of them. Probably could have gotten 80,000 + easy on them but I had a blowout and winter was coming, so I changed all. Great tire

I second the comments by wiingnut. Both sets of the LTX M/S were very quiet, road very well on the highway, performed well in wet/snow, and I got just over 70K out of them each time. Yes they're more expensive, but well worth it in the end. I was very happy with them.
