what performance mods for the 2v 4.6??

hey me and a buddy were just looking in summit and jegs, and we noticed all the superchargers, intakes, heads, cams for the modular engines are either for the 3 valve 4.6 in the mustang, or the 5.4

well we both have 2 valve 4.6 TRUCKS and were wondering if there are any performance parts (other than exaust and cold air intakes) out there for us guys.

also does anyone know all the differences in the mustang and truck 4.6 besides the heads?

thanks

you have the same heads as the 01-04 Mustang 4.6 2v

performance wise, you are limited to a Programmer and a cold air intake/exhaust. Everything else is a waste of money in terms of HP gained per dollar spent.

the 4.6 2v isn't a very responsive motor to mods...hell, the entire modular motor line-up is this way. if you want real power, you have to supercharge/turbo.

The Mod motor loves boost. I'd look into the ProCharger setups for a Mustang. It will require some custom tuning for the tranny, but overall, your motor is identical to a 01-04 Mustang GT motor. should be pretty much a bolt on install with minor modding needed

cool i did not know they were so similar. i thought the 01-04 stangs were 3v. im thinkin im just gunna go with a good cat back setup, a k&n drop in filter, and a good programmer and leave it.... i know the exhaust manifolds look very restrictive, but i wont waste the labor and money on headers till i learn whats the most restrictive areas on the 4.6's......the intake, throttle body, cats, might be worse than the manifolds for all i know....

still eager to learn about these mod motors as ive only owned one for about 4 months now.....i do love that grumble its got, which is why im going exhaust first

another option to consider is gears

dollar for dollar, a set of 4.56 gears will be the best money you can spend on your truck. it will be like adding 30+ RWHP instantly.

a little pricey though at about $500-1,000 per axle. I want some, but I'm gonna spend that money tweaking my current setup

thanks Mike! i will when im ready to buy my programmer. Im still waiting for the money to have you dyno/tune my 87 with a built 5.0. I had talked to you a few months ago, but sh** keeps coming up.....anyway im gunna check out the programmers you got on your site for the 05 too, thanks

Tom 12-16-2008 08:10 AM

Tylus, are you sure about the heads?

I seem to remember the Mustangs of the era pushing 260 HP, while the pre-'07 truck motors are at 231 HP...

I know, the exhaust and intake...and probably the cams are different...

Tylus 12-16-2008 10:18 AM

it's all in the Upper intake...unless the 04-06 trucks are non-PI heads....which is crap if that is the case.

if the 04-06's are non-PI...then his motor is identical to the 96-00 Mustang GT motor

Hey Bob, I still have you on the to do list for the 87.:-X22.. no worries...
On your 05 I have good luck with Airaid intakes... Low noise and good fit.

hi

i've done the same upgrades to my truck with the air intake, exaust and the programmer, but was wondering if you ever did any other power upgrades, like pro, or supercharger?

jet04 04-03-2013 11:46 PM

wrong

03-04 mustang 2v 4.6 have performance improved (pi) heads rather than just
The simple ported heads tht all other 4.6 come stock with. An ideal setup for a
4.6 2v f150 would be the head swap and intake aswell as headers cai electric fans
A custom tune and some gears in the diff...under drive pulleys and of course a pair of
Mild cams tht will open up those vavles...I got a 12.2 sec truck with tht setup and some
Tweeks here and there}>

Hey Jet, welcome to FTE.

You do realize you're responding to a thread that's 4 1/2 years old, right?

But it's a good bump. maybe the OP will revisit the thread and give us an update on what he's done to the truck.

Yea I saw tht but figured I had to say something to the post tht all 4.6 were the same

flamingx 05-24-2013 09:34 AM

I have an '03 Explorer and have discovered it has the same intake and heads as the Mustang GT (cams and injectors I'm still trying to find out about). I also have an '02 F150 that I am scrapping. One major differance I have found so far is the Mustang/ Explorer has the 65mm throttle body and the F150 has a 70mm.

Other than the intake system, (the Mustang is designed for top end and the Effie for low end torque) the only real differance is the tune.

Also I believe the Mustangs run on higher octane fuel.

jet04 05-24-2013 12:14 PM

Well I could say yes but no...I think its more along the intake manifold...f150s have it taller for low end torque and the weight as well takes some of the power...mustangs are lighter and cams
Are made for performance rather than low end torque too
