1964 F-100 My New Project, rear end and clutch questions?
I just purchased a 64 F-100 stepside with 223 and 3 speed. The old truck is in pretty solid shape with a few areas that need some attention but the engine runs great. I have several questions to ask.
1. I have only 3 or 4 leaf springs on the rear, is that normal? 2. My axle code is 12 which equates to a 3.89 diff. However when I rotate the tires and count the drive shaft rotations I count 2.5 to 2.75. Is that right or would you think the 9 inch rear has been changed? 3. When I let out the clutch I have to rev up the engine because there doesn't seem to be a lot of low in torque. The truck has plenty of range between shifts and 2nd gear I can wind out to around 40mph before shifting to 3rd. Is this typical of this engine and tranny combination? Or does it relate to #2? thanks, Gary |
First & foremost welcome aboard; I too recently purchase a 64 model SWB Styleside; I can't answer your reason on your ratio by the # turns you did, but will agree to your third comment, my 223 needs so juice to push it along. But hey I'm alittle older than my trucks and need a little juice ( Coffee) to get me going as well. Looking forward to hearing more about your Slick; mine are in my gallery..
Again welcome aboard. Mitch |
So your 1st gear hasn't much torque either? Sounds like these trucks both need new differentials with lower gearing.
thanks for the reply, I will try to post a picture of my truck here. If will the the flat black rat rod looking 64. Gary |
Forgot to ask how many leafs are on the rear of your truck?

Your truck looks to be in good shape. I see you are from Tennesee, my brother and mother live there also. I grew up in Huntsville, Al, I now live in Il and soon to move to Indiana. I would appreciate any info you could share and I will do the same.
thanks, Gary |
