What Type of Exhaust System should I go with?

I’m considering putting a new muffler/mufflers on my ’04 F-150, 5.4. I was perfectly satisfied with my factory exhaust, until I heard a new Mustang a couple days ago. I have no idea what that Mustang had in the way of performance parts, but it definitely had a nice sounding exhaust system. I’m not planning on doing any engine mods to my truck, but would appreciate suggestions on what I should do to enhance my exhaust system, ie; true dual, after cat dual, single… With what little research I’ve done, I’m thinking Magnaflow or similar for the muffler. Also would like to keep the cost under $1000.

Thanks!!ffice:office" />

I installed a Roush Dual Exhaust on my F-150 5.4 3v & absolutely LOVE it!

I have a 3-inch flow master on my 06 and i HATE it... Will not replace it with a flow master ever again.

Risupercrewman did you fit that your self as im thinking of getting one for my 09 when it turns up. How much better does it sound than standard and was it the off road or legal version?? :-drink

Flowmaster 40 series was installed on my 04 5.4 with under 100 miles on it, 98,000 miles as of today and I think it sounds even better than ever.

It was a cheap mod as well, $125 installed

FTL40 12-07-2008 08:28 PM

I'll throw a vote out there for magnaflow

TOW II 12-07-2008 08:34 PM

I went to Roush’s website, looks like they have a single muffler into two tailpipes. I’m wondering if the two tailpipes are really necessary, or just for looks?? I’m looking for a good throaty sound during rev / acceleration. I don’t want to have to go to the expense of running true dual, if I can get good sound out of a cat back system. I’d sure like to hear from people w/ the different variations before I visit the muffler shop. I’m sure they’ll give me some advice, just worried that the advice will be a little bias. I’m thinking that what I want is a cat back setup w/ dual mufflers, and both tail pipes exiting in front of the passenger side rear wheel. I've got an '04 supercab XLT w/ about 50,000 mi. on it.

Ryan50hrl 12-07-2008 08:35 PM

Anyone here from the midwest?

Tylus 12-07-2008 10:30 PM

Magnaflow gets my vote. Loved it so much that I went and bought another Magnaflow exhaust for my old Mustang GT.

should be under $500 for the entire system shipped to your door. or you can buy the muffler/tips and get it custom welded using OEM pipe for under $250 easily.

still looking for that OEM exhaust Ryan?

Yep...i've found out that they are NOT all the same as one ford dealer told me.....right before they sold me one off a long bed......the mid pipe is NOT all that changed

FYMR 12-08-2008 03:00 AM

Go with the Roush off road. I have the side exit and it sounds the best to me. If you do not like the side exit i would still go with a rear exit Roush than. The only problem is that you will love to hear it and your gas mileage will go down for a while because you will make sure to hear it often.

I went with the ROUSH LEGAL system, it's plenty loud for my taste! They are made by Borla Industries, & are very high quality, with T-304 stainless steel, & awesome Tips!............:-drink

I vote for Magnaflow. I had SIDO on my '05 scab, i like that system so much that when I traded it on an '07 Screw, I put the same kit on again.

mrpositraction 12-08-2008 11:26 AM

Doesn't magnaflow make the mufflers for Roush?

Can you tell me specifically which muffler you've got?? Looking at their website I'm thinking about going with the 16616; 18" muffler w/ in front of rear wheel exit.

ROUSH Performance: ROUSH Ford F-150 Dual Side Exit Exhaust Kit (Off Road)

This is what I got.

Looks like my '04 takes a different kit than the '05-'09. My local muffler shop advertises Borland exhaust systems. I will go by there and see what they can do for me. They should be able to get me pretty close to the Roush pkg.

usmc161 12-08-2008 06:45 PM

you can listen to the rousch on you tube. i vote for the rousch off road.

Nope, Borla.

TOW II 12-08-2008 09:22 PM

Did I say "Borland" :-huh
Meant Borla.8D

AceSC 12-09-2008 12:45 AM

You should go with ROUSH. You can't can't go wrong with the off-road versions of the ROUSH cat back exhaust. I personally like the looks of the Dual side exit kit. If you decide to go with a ROUSH kit contact Mike Roth at Woodhouse Ford mroth@woodhouse.com
You will be very pleased with the sound of the ROUSH exhaust. I had a Bassani SISO kit before I decided to order the ROUSH kit. Although Bassani makes a awesome product, the sound wasn't quite what I expected. Which reminds me, is there anyone in Southern Cali who would be interested in a used Bassani SISO catback system? I have the stainless version and it was on my truck for less than 6,000 miles, includes brand new 4" tip.

Installed Borla on F150 and Cobra...great sound...love it. Highly recommend!!

YouTube - 07 F-150 5.4L w/ Roush Off Road Exhaust

This is the closest I could find to the sound my F-150 makes. The only difference is the side exit in front of the rear passenger wheel. The cold starts sound good but it really sounds great when driving and it is under load. the revs when sitting still pale in comparison when you take off from a stop and when you nail it on the roll. I really love it. To me it is the best sounding F-150 I have heard, and not just because it is mine at all.:-drink

FTE Ken 12-09-2008 08:35 AM

While the Roush kit is made by Borla, you won't find a Borla system that's exactly the same. The Roush kit routes the pipes differently and they are a different size.

pb34 12-09-2008 02:01 PM

I'll throw another vote in there for Magnaflow. I've got one on my truck and it sounds great.

rockstate45 12-09-2008 02:21 PM

Borla IMO. Sounds MUCH better than my friend's Magnaflow on his F150 and it's almost as loud.

It won't win you any volume contests but it sounds damn good and apparently it's considered "loud" by a few girls that can hear it from outside the cab when I pull away. I wouldn't necessarily say that though lol.

Checked out three muffler places today, all three said they could order me the Magnafolw, but two recommended Flowmasters. I got the feeling that they didn’t think there was any difference between the two. In fact one place told me that Flowmaster builds a generic version of their muffler for other companies. Midas has a deal going right now for Flow master dual out system for $299, for the 40 series, and $349 for the 50 series. I’m sure that Roush, Borland, Bansini… are probably much better mufflers, but how much better? I’ve gotten a lot of recommends for Magnaflow, but is this the old Ford / Chevy debate only between Mag / Flow?? I don’t want an overly loud system, but don’t want to drive away feeling like I didn’t get enough bang for my bucks. Flowmaster has an ‘American Thunder Muscle Truck, dual out same side system’ that looks like what I’m wanting, and it looks like I can get it, plus installation for $300.

rockstate45 12-09-2008 07:18 PM

Tow, get it. You're going to lose some power with the Dronemasters b/c they're a baffled design. If you want a muffler that won't lose power, but maybe even gain a few (like 5 TOPS), then get a straight through muffler like Borla, or Magnaflow or the others.

Make sure the pipes aren't too big b/c then you'll lose backpressure. Losing Backpressure = bye bye low end torque but with a small increase in peak hp. The smaller the pipes and you'll gain it but lose top end power.

Good luck man. The Flow40 will be pretty loud. Hope you don't like to go on hgihway trips b/c you'll be droned out like crazy!

I would not listen to the "muffler places". They seem to always steer you away from what you want. Go Roush imo.:-drink

mwil809 12-10-2008 04:49 AM

I installed the Banks Monster Exhaust with no regrets. It sounds great, looks great and I get a lot of compliments as well

Very Happy With My Mbrp.
+1 On The Dronemasters :-X18

RISUPERCREWMAN 12-10-2008 10:15 AM

ROUSH is AWESOME!.......

Towhook 12-10-2008 10:59 AM

Borla sounds better than Magnaflow

Friend has Magnaflow on his truck and cobra. He agrees my 150 and cobra sound better with Borla. The Borla sound is deeper, throatier than the Magnaflow. Now..to me the Magnaflow does sound good...but is bit higher pitched than Borlas.

I have the side exit Borlas...though I wish now I'd gotten the dual rear exit.

rockstate45 12-10-2008 11:03 AM

That's what I'm talkin' bout Towhook. I couldn't agree more with what you said.

My Borla personally isn't louder than my buddy's Magnaflow but it's sounds so much better and deeper that just b/c you can hearmine from a block away and his from maybe a block and a half or two, doesn't mean anything to me.

If I wanted loud I'd buy a Flowmaster Super 40 or a Cherry Bomb (ehhh to Glasspacks though).

tmuti13 12-10-2008 03:54 PM

I've had a Borla on mine for a couple weeks now and it is awesome. I've got the dual rear exit SI/DO.

TOW II 12-10-2008 07:24 PM

"The Flow40 will be pretty loud. Hope you don't like to go on hgihway trips b/c you'll be droned out like crazy!"

Well damnit, now ya got me scared. I was already to go tomrrow and just get the Midas Special. One thing I've always liked about F150s was the quiet ride!!

rockstate45 12-10-2008 08:54 PM

Yeah man Flow 40s will be pretty loud. Especially if you like quiet. Have em tack weld like a Flow 50 up there and see if they'll allow you to hear it before you buy it.

I'm all for the Borla. Loud when I want to hear it but quiet on my 900 mile drives. Its the perfect combination for me

My only complain is its price. I think just the mufflers are about 250. I have the catback for my truck. For the F150 I think they're like less than 800 at full price. Should be able to get one for like 600
