how do i identify rear axle?
oh ya, the reason i ask is because i want to buy this dana 60 front axle from a local auto wreckers (he says its out of a F350, i dunno which year yet, only talked on the phone - just in the first stages of finding a front axle) so i can get rid of my ttb ifs and install a solid front axle... i am hoping to buy this dana 60 (has 4.10 gears) and buy new 4.10 gears for my current rear end.. - i currently have 3.55 but when i throw on 35's i'll want lower gears anyways
but i am wondering if the dana 60 will be wider? like from wheel to wheel... i know i can cut off my lug bolts and buy spacers but i'd rather not... if this dana 60 is out of a 92-96 F350, it should be the same width as my current axle right? thanks a lot. :) |
how do i identify rear axle?
it should be the same width, if its not it wont matter that much, old ch**ys used to have the front tires stickin out further than the rear cause of somethin with the 4wd.

how do i identify rear axle?
I don't know if anyone has told you but the tag on your rear end is the best chance of getting the right information on your axle. I just went through all this with my Ranger and went nuts trying to get a straight answer until I crawled under there with the local parts man from the Ford dealer and he told me what the numbers mean. On yours the top number is the lot (mfg.) number and means nothing to you unless there is a recall on that particular lot. The lower number is the important one for us and it says 3L55 10 2 6C12. Ok the first part says that you have a 3.55 ratio, The L says that there is a Traction-Loc carrier installed (limited slip) and the 10 2 says that you have a 10.25" ring gear. I'm sorry the 6C12 part wasn't part of my limited education. So I can't help with that part. I checked just for fun and there is a 4.10 ring and pinion set available for it.
Good Luck :-X25 |

how do i identify rear axle?
I am guessing your talking about the 74 in your name. Check the tagson the diff cover, someone here can read them for you. If the tags arent there, there should be numbers cast into the diff housings in the area where your axle tubes connect.
