Anti Theft system question
My 2000 Expedition anti theft system was set off and I can not start the vehicle up. I have no idea what the procedure is. Any help?

Is this the factory system or an aftermarket system?

Ford Expedition Alarm
I believe it is the factory system. The only equipment I received was the key FOB and key.

I went to the Ford website and pulled up the owner's manual for your 2000 Expedition. Went to the anti-theft section and here is what it said (lots to read)...
SECURILOCK Y PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM Your vehicle is equipped with a coded-key anti-theft system. Only the correct key will be able to start your vehicle. If your keys are lost or stolen, you must take your vehicle to your dealership for key reprogramming. This system provides an advanced level of vehicle theft protection. Your vehicle’s engine can only be started with the two coded keys provided with your vehicle. Each time you start your vehicle, the coded key is read by the anti-theft system. If the key identification code matches the code stored in the anti-theft system, the vehicle’s engine is allowed to start. If the key identification code does not match the code stored in the system or if a coded key is not detected (vehicle theft situation), the vehicle’s engine will not operate. If there is any anti-theft problem with your vehicle, ensure ALL coded keys for that vehicle are brought to the dealership, to aid in troubleshooting. The SecuriLocky passive anti-theft system is not compatible with aftermarket remote start systems. Use of these systems may result in vehicle starting problems and a loss of security protection. Large metallic objects, electronic devices on the key chain that can be used to purchase gasoline or similar items, or a second key on the same key ring as the PATS ignition key may cause vehicle starting concern and record DTC’s under certain conditions. If present, you need to keep these objects from touching the PATS ignition key while starting the engine. These objects and devices cannot damage the PATS ignition key, but can cause a momentary concern if they are too close to the key during engine start. If a problem occurs, turn ignition OFF and restart the engine with all other objects on the key ring held away from the ignition key. Check to make sure the encoded ignition key is an approved Ford encoded ignition key. Spare coded keys can be purchased from your dealership and programmed to your anti-theft system. Refer to Programming spare SecuriLocky keys for more information. If one or both of your coded keys are lost or stolen and you want to ensure the lost or stolen key will not operate your vehicle, bring your vehicle and all available coded keys to your dealership for reinitialization. Theft indicator The theft indicator in the instrument cluster will operate as follows: ² When the ignition is OFF, the theft indicator will flash briefly every two seconds to indicate the anti-theft system is protecting your vehicle. ² When the ignition is turned to ON or START, the theft indicator will light for three seconds and then go out. If the theft indicator stays on for an extended period of time or flashes rapidly, have the system serviced by your dealership or a qualified technician. Programming spare SecuriLock Y keys Spare coded keys can be purchased from your dealership and programmed to your anti-theft system (up to a total of eight keys). Your dealership can program your new coded key(s) to your vehicle or you can do it yourself using the following simple procedure. To program a new coded key yourself, you will need two previously programmed coded keys (keys that already operate your vehicle’s engine). If two previously programmed coded keys are not available (one or both of your original keys were lost or stolen), you must bring your vehicle to your dealership to have the spare coded key(s) programmed. Procedure to program spare SecuriLock Y keys to your vehicle New coded keys must have the correct mechanical key cut for your vehicle. Conventional (non-coded) keys cannot be programmed to your vehicle. You will need to have two previously programmed coded keys and the new unprogrammed SecuriLocky key readily accessible for timely implementation of each step in the procedure. Please read and understand the entire procedure before you begin. 1. Insert the first previously programmed coded key into the ignition and turn the ignition from OFF to ON (maintain ignition in ON for at least one second). 2. Turn ignition to OFF and remove the first coded key from the ignition. 3. Within five seconds of turning the ignition to OFF, insert the second previously programmed coded key into the ignition and turn the ignition from OFF to ON (maintain ignition in ON for at least one second but no more than five seconds). 4. Turn the ignition to OFF and remove the second coded key from the ignition. 5. Within 10 seconds of turning the ignition to OFF, insert the new unprogrammed key (new key/valet key) into the ignition and turn the ignition from OFF to ON (maintain ignition in ON for at least one second). This step will program your new key to a coded key. 6. To program additional new unprogrammed key(s), repeat this procedure from step 1. If the programming procedure was successful, the new coded key(s) will start the vehicle’s engine. The theft indicator (located on the instrument panel) will light for three seconds and then go out. If the programming procedure was not successful, the new coded key(s) will not operate the vehicle’s engine. The theft indicator will flash on and off. Wait at least one minute and then repeat the procedure from step 1. If failure repeats, bring your vehicle to your dealership to have the new spare key(s) programmed. REMOTE ENTRY SYSTEM Your vehicle is equipped with a remote entry system which allows you to: ² unlock the vehicle doors without a key. ² lock all the vehicle doors without a key. ² activate the personal alarm. The remote entry features only operate with the ignition in the OFF position. If there is any potential remote keyless entry problem with your vehicle, ensure ALL key fobs (remote entry transmitters) are brought to the dealership, to aid in troubleshooting. Hope this helps. If you need to look further at the manual (if you don't have the manual for your Expy), you can go to www.fleet.ford.com and go to the Maintenance section, and click on Owner's Manuals. Enter your info and your manual is pulled up. |

I am installing the Ford Remote start on my 01 Expy. When I purchased the truck a few months back, I only received one key. Will I really have to have two keys to get this programmed with the one existing key that I have? I really don't want to hand over $75 bucks to purchase a new key and have it programmed by the dealer.
Any help would be great! Thanks! |
Can I ask where you got thr remote start? I have been considering an after market add-on for ours as the Expedition is always parked outside.
As for the keys and fobs, my understanding is you do need both factory keys to program additional ones and I am in the same situation as my 2000 only came with one key and one fob. I am still trying to figure out what other bugs there are with teh truck and if I can fix them or if I need the dealer to address them all at one visit. We have had our 2000 for just under a week. |

I'm assuming you figured this out by now tallguy?
I have a related question... With the SecuriLock Anti-Theft system.. can thieves still hot-wire the vehicle if they know what they're doing? The reason I ask is because I'm contemplating getting rid of our comprehensive insurance to save some bucks.. but I am a bit nervous about theft because I live in a rather large city and we did have our last vehicle stolen in January 2008. |
Nothing is perfect and I am sure someone can figure out how to steal one of these. Also keep in mind that comprehensive is also good for things like weather damage, vandalism and glass breakage. You may save a few dollars but I don't think it is worth the risk. Don't be penny smart and dollar dumb!!!!
