4.2 Oil Pump Install

Hey guys I was wondering if there is a special tool or any specific information needed to replace the external oil pump on my 97 F150 w/ 4.2 auto. Just wondering, didn't want to find out after jumping into it with both feet that I may need something.
thanks, Jeff

I believe you still have to drop the pan to remove the pick-up tube before removing the pump I believe. I could be wrong.

hi, its simply bolted on. be carefull when removing it because the oil pump drive is very thin and easy damaged.
i may be off base but why the replacement. i changed my pump due to loss off pressure only to find that the problem was coolant in the oil.
97 was the bad gasket year and distroyed my engine. bokker.

Because best I can tell it is going bad. When its at normal running temp and I stop (stop sign, red light) and the rpm's drop to idle while in gear the oil pressure bottoms out and the light comes on. I can put it in neutral or park or just increase the rpm's and it jumps back up to normal. I don't think its a bearing issue because the pressure would probablybe low all the time if that was the case. I am going to do a compression test today to see what it reads across the board just to be sure on the head gasket but there is no coolant in the oil.

hi again, the symtoms were exactly the same as yours with the oil pressure dropping like a stone at low revs. keep a close eye on your coolant level, to be sure.
the issue with the gaskets was not head but lower intake and timeing case gaskets.
do a search on the v6 4,2 forum "hydro locking" and hopefully it may save you the cost of a new oil pump. hope all is well bokker.

Looks like an oil pump fixed it. I let it idle for about 20 minutes after I got finished and then drove it around for about 20 more and haven't noticed any fluctuation in the gauge. I'll give it a couple more days to make sure but it looks promising. Thanks for the help..
Jeff.
