Electric Connectors
 

Quick question for you guys.

I've taken some of the electrical connectors apart under the hood and noticed some of them have some kind of white grease on the connectors and pins. Anyone know what type of grease this is?

I know dielectric grease is an insulator and good for keeping moisture out and such out of the connector but would you use that on the pin connectors?

Just preparing for when my IDM arrives.

Don't use it on the pins. If it is even semi conductive then it will short all the pins together.

Jim, how about white grease? I haven't read anything that says it is conductive. I use it as a corrosion preventative.

I use dieelectric grease to seal up the connections. IMO if it is non conductive then it is an insultor then putting it on the connection may cause conductivity problems. As long as it is sealed from the elements the chances of corrosion are greatly reduced.

Bulb grease maybe? First time I mentioned that to a friend of mine he thought I was joking (like blinker fluid). It is dielectric, you can find it at just about any auto store. Best to keep it away from the contacts, though some connectors are self cleaning, just play it safe.

Ok, so a little dielectric grease around the connector to seal the connector but no grease of any kind on the pins. That is what I'm understanding. :-X22

white lithium grease, can buy it at any hardware store.

A respected Ford technician on a different Ford site said to just gob the dielectric grease in the connector. When the connector is pushed together, the grease will be pushed out of the way and you will have excellent metal-to-metal contact where you need it. The remaining grease is more waterproof than regular white grease and it will help keep moisture, road dirt and water splash out of the rest of the connector.

That's the way I have been doing it for some time now without any problems.

Don't gob it in there. Too much grease will prevent the connector from closing. And if you force it, the grease will push out the wire seals, in some cases, pulling the pin out of the connector with it.

If anything, dab it on.
