Things that make it go THUD!

So since i have owned the truck it randomly started to make a hard hitting thud sound under the drivers side when i

A. Brake+turn right

B. Turning right + brakes hard

Or.

C. Have to brake really hard to miss some idiot that cut me off!

This problem started happening last year as random as possible. It had go away about a month after it started doing it and then came back. It hasn't done it in the past few months that i have had my truck back. Then last week it came back. It dose not do it every time one of the things listed above occurs. I would say 8 out of 10 times. And of course it NEVER does it when i have the opportunity for someone with good ears to be listening.
My thoughts are:

A. Drivers side leaf spring bushings

B. Drivers side leaf spring center pin:eek:

Or

C. Thats all i got:confused:

As always Thank you all for your help and ideas!

It might be the sway bar end link. Mine has started to do it every once in a while. That is what I plan on replacing.

Didn't some one have this problem and it was sway bar bushings????

superpony18 11-08-2008 06:51 PM

mine turned out to be the leaf spring bushings, so inspect well.

Here is another link on the probable problem...
I have the same problem and everything else is good.

You can spray the sway bar bushings with lithium grease and go for a test drive. If the squeaking stops, you know that the bushings need to be replaced. If the squeaking doesn't stop. Spray the leaf spring tips, and go for a test drive. Same thing for the shock mounts etc...
Edit. I test drove a 03 350 CC. The ball joints in the driver's side were so bad that it made a thud sound when turning left. Good luck

Ya i just did all my sway bar bushing... That was what was the sounds when on rough terrain... This is under heavy load (stopping hard, stopping and turning) so on

drivers side front, rear, or right under the cab?

Have you checked your front axle steering joints? Kingpin bushings/ balljoints? IIRC my F350 originally had plastic bushings in the kingpins that made some pretty wierd thuds when they failed.

Well, I guess I was right. Hopefully it takes care of my problem too.

Drivers side front... Sounds like some good ideas thanks guys!

Definately sounds like ball joints to me. You already replaced the bushings but you can remove the sway bar for a while, if it goes away then you know that was it. If you haven't done ball joints yet, that is the most likely. Second idea because this is what happend on mine. Is there is a piece of rolled piece of steal in the center section of the leaf eyes. On the passenger side this lined up with the horizontal movement of the truck, ie braking, and it actually ovalled it out enough that it made a thunk sound as well. Replaced front bushings with parts from energy suspension and it solved that problem.

2nd the ball joints. Those were my symptoms exactly.

jdecker88 11-09-2008 07:54 PM

My thud was the sway bar bushings and a grease alimite hitting the u-joint. Now I do have some bad sqeaking from bad spring bushings.

Update

Its the drivers side lower ball joint. When i did my brakes and rotors last weekend i found that my lower ball joint has about an inch of play in it.

So... When it is dry out the ball joint is binding up without letting go. Just a little bit of moisture out and it binds up as normal but then lets go! (insert thud sound)

So hes the crappy part! I did both sides brakes and rotors last weekend $$$ and this weekend i get to do the drivers side ball joints hub assym. and outer axle seal!$$$$$$$$$$$$$$:-banghead:-banghead:-banghead:-banghead

Maybe next month i can afford to do the passenger side!

Anyways as always thanks for the help!

Nolan,

Did it only do it when braking? Ive got the same prob when turning MAX to the right. Havent even thought about checking ball joints though!
