226 Expansion plug?
 

Hello.
Does anybody know where I can buy the concave expansion plugs for the 6 cylinder H 226 engine?
I had a plug weeping coolant and when I removed it I found the block behind the plug was filled with rust.
I'd like to remove the rest of the plugs and clean the block without pulling the engine from the truck.
The hole in the side of the engine block appears to be 1.31 inches (1 5/16?).
The guy at the auto parts store tries to be helpful, but he wants to sell me a solid cup style plug or an adjustable rubber "doughnut" type plug.
There does not appear to be enough area to drive the cup style "flush" into the block.
I'd rather replace the plugs with steel or brass plugs then attempt a "doughnut".
Any help (part number?) is appreciated.

When you find the information on the Freeze Plug please post it as I will probably be needing one soon myself. So far the Bars Leak is holding.

I used Dorman P18S, it measures 1 5/16 inch.

I got mine from egge engine

I have 13 of them. I got mine from Napa and they had to order that many for me to get one. I didn't even end up using them. I went a head and put the rubber one in with the bolt in the middle of it. At first I didn't think it would work b/c it didn't look like there was enough room to. But believe me when I put it in there and started tightening it up, it tightened bery well. I was afraid it would leak, but I don't think you could get it to leak if you wanted to. I will see if I can find them, they should be in my garage if you would need them. But it would be easier to order them from Napa. Scott

hi there so I'm having this new exact issue something iv never heard of before I didn't know what to think if ford motors really do have rubber plugs between my engine an tranny where my coolant is gushing out I need to haul my motor or tranny to see exactly what these plugs supposedly look like my truck runs great this is a first for me any info if these plugs between my motor an tranny even exists a true answer will be nice
I can understand being coolant plugs on the outside of the motor but in between motor an tranny it sounds rediculous but it is supposedly true, also guys mine has been making a loud hissing vacuum sound robbing me of power even the engine running barely can hear the straight pipe rumble hissing sound an after it gets warm it will idle but heat fast an bog out power wise
but now if this plugs gone I would think it would make a suction noise an bogg taking air like that, anyways nice to read what yall are posting here helps me out thanks

Hello there over here in canada myself an my 84 i6 started pouring rand coolant as fast as I can dump it in its leaking from one of these plugs between my motor an tranny kinda madening place now that I know for sure I will haul my motor or tranny I believe tranny would be easier , I actually will be needing how ever many there is between in back motor I don't even know what or how they look like if you have any left to sell I'd buy what I need I plan on hauling the tranny out over this weekend not looking forward to do in it but I guess it is better then my engine blasting out oil or blown up I would have never guessed this ever I actually just bought a rebuilt complete spare but IL save it if s all I need wish me luck will post pics

I found the large 2-1/16 inch concave (Welch) expansion plug in brass at goodson.com. The part number is 96-2062CCB. They are about 4 bucks apiece. I believe it is made by QualCast. This plug is the large one at the back of the engine that you don’t want any trouble with. I dealt with a Danielle. She was very nice to deal with. They did not list a 1-5/16 inch brass concave expansion plug.

Update: I have removed the bell housing and revealed another expansion plug (see pictures). I believe this one is for removing/installing the cam shaft. The upper one appears that it will take a 2-1/16” concave/Welch style or a 1-15/16 cup style. I would strongly suggest a nice film of Permatex No. 1, the one that hardens.

Here is the upper expansion plug on the back of my 226H engine before removal. If you zoom in on the picture you can see the size stamped into the plug; 2-1/16”.

Here is a picture of one of the freeze plugs on the side of the block. You can just make out the size stamped into it; 1-5/16”.

Here is the lower expansion plug on the back of the engine that I believe is for installing/removing the cam. I did not replace this as I figure being exposed to oil and not water it will never corrode.
