'71 rear end in a '51 question...

Hi all - I finally got my '71 F250 rear end home - still cleaning it up, haven't even pulled the drums yet...

My '51 has the drum e-brake on the tranny, and the Dana 60 has the e-brakes on it. Has anyone ever gotten rid of the e-brake on a 60? I'm just curious how much of a chore it is, do I have to get different parts, etc? The guy I got it from, his son just cut the cables, so they are hanging out about 6". I'm just not sure how soon I'll be in the position to pull the drums - once I do, it's going to be pretty much stuck in one place, until I get it done, so for now, I'll leave the wheels on it, since it could be a bear to work around...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Haven't done it but it should be relatively easy. The cable is attached to a bracket that is attached to the rearmost shoe with a horseshoe clip (some just fit into a slot in the shoe). Remove the bracket from the shoe, remove the E-brake cable and that should do it. Leave the bracket out when you reassemble. You might want to use some silicone to plug the E-brake cable hole. :)

Vern - thanks! I might just weld up the hole...

I think I'd just plug it. You never know if you might later want to change to a later engine or use a different transmission and would need to use the conventional type E-brake. :)

One of those hole caps with little fingers on the inside that snap in would be the quickest, easiest thing to do.

Oh yeah, I forgot. You're one of those dyed-in-the-wool stock guys that would rather cut something off than venture a little toward the dark side. We do have cookies you know.... :)

Oh Roger...OH ROGER!

Are you ever tempting fate....you just had to say it.

You realize of course that two minutes into your test drive with the new rear end and those welded shut brake cable holes, that stock tranny is gonna be layin' in pieces all over the road!!!!!!
