6.8L turns but won't start?
So my 2001 X 6.8L turns over but won't start, no Theft light flashing, plenty of battery power. Not sure if I hear the fuel pump, I hear a brief sound from drivers side front, maybe the injectors purging? The X would always start with out hesitation, like instantaneously, almost before I would turn the key I've done a search and read many posts, and most lead to the PATS or the CPU on Diesels. I'm at a loss. I wasn't able to really dig into her as this happened just before a CPR class I had to get too. My mechanic told me to check the Enersha (I have no idea how to spell this) kill switch and fuel pump. I haven't hit anything and the switch did not appear to be thrown (mechanic has seen a lot of Enersha switches gone bad. As far as the fuel pump haven't been able to check along with fuses. It was a late class and I work tomorrow and will not be able to look at the X till Friday. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Sounds like a relay
Look in your owners manual in the fuse/relay section and see if your PCM (computer) has a separate relay that powers it. If it does, swap relays in the power panel under the steering column. I have a 6.0 and the PCM has a separate relay. A post in the 6.0 section had the same issue as you. I suggested he swap relays as there are at least 6 relays that are the same in the 6.0 power panel. He said he would try it. Have not heard back from him in a week so I assume the relay swap fixed his problem.
Also, check your fuel pump fuse. DSMMH |
DHMMS, I will look in to that. Thanks

A crank, but no start condition normally points to either the fuel pump or the Idle Air Controller. When you try to start the truck again, step on the gas; if it starts, it's your IAC that need cleaning or replacing. To confirm the condition, take your foot off the gas; if it sputters and dies then start with the IAC and work your way to the fuel pump if necessary.

Toreador Diesel,
Forgot to mention that I get no change when stepping on the gas peddle during starting. Thanks |
Are you sure you have plenty of battery power. A weak battery will also cause a no-start condition to protect the PCM.

Well she turns over nice and fast, no dimming of anything, so I believe plenty of power. I won't be able to check actual voltage until tomorrow.

Check the emergency fuel pump cutoff switch.
Mine tripped one night while the front end was hoisted into the air while being towed. |
could be the key. When I got my X, it came with a broken key. I use that one as a spare incase i get locked out. and if it gets found under the truck, then all it'll do is open the door. Engine cranks but no fuel to the engine.

Turned out to be the Fuel Pump! Surprising at just 43,000 miles and the Fuel tank is nice and clean. Just 3 hours to install, due to the height of the X I had to use ratchet straps to lower and hoist the tank. But turned out to be one of the easiest pump replacements I've done. Thanks for the info from everyone.

Wonder how many other medics/firefighters are on here? I'm a 27 year veteran of the Hobart, IN F.D. as a firefighter/paramedic. Best job in the world! Also a AHA CPR and ACLS instructor as well as a hazmat tech.
This is in a city of about 40,000 that covers 54 sq miles and we run about 5,000 calls per year. |
i will have to get some pictures of excursion that we use at work .... it looks sharp with the stripping and the light bar, the rescue squad also has 10 e350 psd's ambulances, a 2500 suburban, 2 1500 suburbans, the ex, a full size bronco, 2 f450 crash rescue trucks, f550 medium crash rescue truck, 3 tech trailers and several boats and rafts. i have been on the "bandaid box" for about 16 yrs ... 14 as a paramedic
