checked my ebrake out yesterday
 

well after get stuck and useing my ebrake the other day it sounded like maybe it didn't fully release so i figured i would check it

well after taking the pads and evething off i tryed to pull the rotor off and it didn't move at all...so i took off the little rubber plug on the back side to see the adjuster and find it rusted and dry mudd inside..so popped off the adjuster through the hole and the rotor falls right off

so i clean it all and antisiezed everthing and put it back together and now got a full mpg more over my 200 mile trip i just took and it feelss like it coast a little easier....it had been draging for a while

From the posts about E brakes rusting and seizing I'm beginning to think that maybe I want to gut mine.

Just one little thing - it's not an 'emergency brake' - it's a 'parking brake'. Most of them will hardly keep a truck from rolling, much less slow one down from highway speed. It's been over fifty years since they had emergency brakes.

Bumping an old post as a reminder to check your parking brake. This past Friday I loaded up my Kubota and headed to the wood lot for a load of firewood. On the way down the rear end started shaking a little bit. At first I thought it was the trailer but then realized it felt just like when the parking brake does not disengage all the way. It stopped shaking after a few seconds. Got to the wood lot and the parking brake went to the floor. Found out the "sissor" arms were so stuck on the right side that the cable came off. The left side was also froze up pretty good as well. Here is a link to a video I found on youtube that was very helpful.

The thing is, if you actually USE the parking brake as intended, it almost never causes any trouble. Its when it is not used that it can lock up. With an auto trans, stop the vehicle with the service brake and hold it. Put trans in Park, set parking brake then release service brake. This keeps pressure off the parking pawls in the trans, making it easy to pull it out of Park. It's even more important to use it with a manual trans. You have to put the trans in Neutral so you can use your left foot to set the parking brake. Then you put it in gear and turn the engine off. I usually put it in Reverse since I have to back out from the regular parking spot.

If they are properly adjusted and have functional parts, they will do both. You cannot move my truck with the parking brake firmly set.
