do ford make a 9" posi?
 

Hello guys.
Forgive me for not knowing this as I am new to all that is Ford.

I have read the articles on this site about donor vehicles that have 9" rears that would fit my 52 M1. What i didnt read was that any of those vehicle have posi rear ends.
What donors have posi's that would fit my truck? Either drum or disc brakes would be good.

Ford did in fact make many, they could be found under most models of full sized cars and trucks from somewhere in the 60`s up to the early 80`s I believe.
This again is going just by my old memory, someone with a positive answer will chime in soon I hope.........

I know that they made many. We had a 59 Ranchero with a factory posi, but it was an 8" I believe. I think some of the 4x4 trucks of the sixties or seventies would probably have a posi in them. Some of the earlier Big Cars (fairlanes and such) would probably have a posi in some of them. Try to locate numberdummy, as he would likely have the most accurate list of vehicles most likely equipped with a posi rear end in the 9" housing.

Ford called it a Traction Lock. Positrack is a GM term and there are those around here who will get their panties in a knot by having the wrong terminology used....lol

The traction lock was an option on most any car so it can be found most anywhere. The best way is to find the ID tag on the diff.

Sorry bobby, I knew it was calledby a special term, but forgot what it was. Blame all the "old timer" mechanics for the generic reference use of the term posi I guess.

Personally, I don't have a problem with the terminology and I refer to them as "posi" also, it just rolls off the tongue alot easier than "traction lock" or "T lock""

I'm searching for one for my diff also. I have got to get rid of the 4:11 gears....lol

your best bet for finding a limited slip for a 9" is in the 1/2ton trucks up to 83 i think was last year of the 9" in Ford Trucks.

most 9" rears in 73 and newer Ford's have the 31 spline axles. most 72 and older trucks had the 28 spline axles (of course there are exceptions, most 6 cyl 73 and newer had the 28 spline also, and some camper special 68 - 72's had 31 spline axles (which just happen to be the same lenght as the 28 spline axles).

on the VIN plate look for a letter and number combination (such as H4, H2 or B4, etc). this denotes the vehicle has a posi (but not a number followed by a letter, such as 13J, 12J, etc, not sure what that designates for sure). this is also true on cars that have a 9" rear, but they usually just have a letter instead of a number under the axle code.

Actually until the late 60's Ford called theirs an Equa Loc, then went to the Traction Loc name. The "Loc" being a misnomer since they did not actually lock but limited the slippage using clutches. If you can find the dataplate on the donner vehicle or if the id tag is intact I believe most limit slip Ford differentials had a letter in their code.
