Update Power Steering?

Has anyone updated the power steering in their truck? I don't like the old over assisted vague feeling power steering and am wanting something that feels more like the steering in my 03 F150 SC. Is there a simple way of doing this?

I have not driven a 78-79, I assume you're saying they're closer to the late model 'feel'?

Do I just need the pump or will I need the pump and steering box? Will I run into issues getting the later model pump to fit with the earlier brackets (FE engine)?

Thanks for the info, btw.

Ford changed the P/S pumps on all the 1978 vehicles, cars & trucks. The 1978 pump is totally different than the previous pumps.

The 1977 and earlier P/S pump mounting & adjusting brackets and the P/S hoses, will not work with the 1978 and later P/S pump.

Well my steering works fine--I almost don't need any fingers at all! :) The power assist is just too much compared to what I'm used to anymore.

Don't complain about Power-assist being "too much", I still have "Armstrong-power-steering", not nearly as much fun to paralell park.....:(

I also need to rebuild my entire steering system, so I'm going with something a bit heavier duty...

Ford 1500 psi 4 GPM Super Pump
GearBox
Hydroboost Instructions
Hydraulic Winches

I was looking for a while and that's one of the higher rated power steering pump. That gear box should be able to handle anything I would throw at it, and that pump would do great to power the hydraulic assist power braking and the hydraulic winch. $800 for the winch (plus the adapter kit), $250 for the pump, $330 for the gear box, couple hundred in other parts, and I would be set.

Hell, pretty soon with the money you're spending you could have bought half a truck.................lol :)

Ben; The 77 is a work of art. I'm working on a 74, F100, 4x4, 428, c-6, manual lock-outs. Fitted a 78 Bronco power steering into it, Like an idiot I chose to dump the power ram steering because of leaks and because parts were non-existent when I decided to make the change. I used the 74 pump and modified the frame mount for the steering box, changed the pitman arm to hang lower. Had to do this because the later box moves the steering opposite to the 74 pitman arm set-up. The steering is quick with the larger 74 steering wheel. I had to put dual steering stabilizer shocks to slow down rate of steering. All in all it works great, especially in rough terrain with larger rocks and boulders to climb over. Those days are gone, now and I just want a nice clean original F100 for yard work and nostalgia. I wish I had known about Mac's or LMC back then, I would have kept the ram steering out of respect to the truck.
