ok ive got a ? for some reason i put like 50 bucks in my rear tank to run off of cuz my front tank has rust in it when i ran that 50 bucks off of gas i switched to the front tank. and before it had only like 1/2 of a tank and when i switched to it it showed like way over full im wondering how this happened. did the fuel gauge mess up on the front tank, cuz it dont seem as thought the gas gauge isnt goin down any as im driving around. but wouldnt it show empty? there isnt any way if you put enough gas in the rear tank it just overflows to the front (is it????) its wierd never had this happen before and now it seams as though ive blown all of the rust out of the front tank. whats the best way to clean the tank to prevent it from rusting?

I've heard of this possibility with EFI but I don't see how it could be possible in a
non-EFI variant. Well, I guess the tank selector valve could conceivably allow this to
happen but, again, it'd require electric pumps in the tanks to push fuel, not a mechanical
pump on the engine (I'm assuming you have this) which pulls fuel from the tanks.

Happens all the time; when you take it apart, remove the triangular-shaped cap at the
pivot point of the sending unit and you'll probably see unwound wire in there which is
contacting the moveable portion in a willy-nilly fashion. Those sending units work just
like old-school rheostats with a very fine wire wrapped around a solid object which a
brass contact moves across as the gas level rises & lowers. That wire oftentimes
breaks and becomes unwound, hitting the brass electrical contact willy-nilly.

Depending on the level & extent of damage, it's prolly best to replace it/them. People
have used all kinds of methods to clean 'em, use the Search feature. But if your tank is
cracked or rusted through, I think it's best to just replace it.
