6.4 a failure?
Now F is coming out with a 6.7 for 2010 already. Now if the 6.4 is so great why change it after a few years?
if it is not a bad engine then F must be trying to go bankrupt. |
Well I just bought mine a month ago, only 1400 miles on it so I don't know if it is a failure yet. Maybe they need to beef it up with the new emission requirements in order to just maintain current performance?
|
Because International makes the engine, Ford killed off the contract between them and International. So when 2010 comes around, ford won't be buying International engines anymore.
|
I like the 6.4 The other day, I got to see a 6.4 all torn down. All the internals, block, rods, crank, etc look to be very beefy. The con rods are thicker than the 6.0's. The block and bed plate and con rods look extremely strong. At this school, there was a Cummins 5.9 or 6.7, can't tell for sure. Anyway, the Cummins bottom end was not as impressive. I'm sure the Cummins is strong but I also think International closed the gap with the 6.4, even passing Cummins in a few areas.

future for 6.4?
Does International have future uses for the 6.4 such as buses and mid size trucks past 2010 or without the Ford market will the engine die?
|
I believe the 6.4 is already being used in buses and trucks, much like the 7.3 and 6.0 were.

Parts......

Internationals version of the 6.4 is known as the MaxxForce7, it only has one turbo. Its doing well in International trucks and buses and is getting better fuel milege than the VT365 did. Its planned to be produced and used beyond 2010. |
me likey the 6.4
I was looking under the hood after I got home from work tonight, planning how I and when I was going to install the radiator T line fix and I was admiring how awesome the engine is designed and fit under the hood. Everything appears well thought out.
My Job #1 truck has not had a failure in 22k miles, well, since the day I bought it. I tow a 5th wheel camper at least once per month on a camping trip and a boat to the lake at least two weekends a month. It's been an awesome motor. I'm sure they'll be parts around if necessary. Deciding to change engines is a big deal and I believe a well planned venture. |
I sometimes wish people would do just a little research before posting. :-banghead

The 6.4 is far from a failure. It's just getting replaced because Ford and International just plain don't get along anymore. I've got over 40k on my truck now and I've had it since it had 0.8 miles on the lot. From stock truck to an 8,500 lb. +/-500 RWHP tank. I've had this rig overloaded with well over 30k GVWR and it hasn't missed a step.
Compared to the release of the 6.0's the 6.4 release was almost flawless. The only real problems this new generation of diesels has ever has was related to the dang EPA required emissions crap. |

I would not hesitate to buy a 6.4 but the DPF delete and tuner purchase would happen very early in its life cycle! For those of you that have had both, will a 6.4 with the above be better/worse than the 6.0 for mileage/power? |
Mileage differs from truck to truck with the DPF deletes. I'm running the extreme SCT tune which is around 500 RWHP and I get 19-21 mpg going 75 mph. (Hand Calculated) DPF and Cat gone, S&B intake.
Power is amazing. I've seen over 56 psi. of boost when I really get on it, and I'm thinking I need to get a bigger clutch to handle the power. |
southtexasdiesel, you just have a bad a$$ truck.i love the staks.
i have 32k on my job2 and it hasnt skipped a beat |
The reason they got rid of the 6.0 was for the 2008 emissions standard. The reason they are getting rid of the 6.4 is for the 2010 emissions standard.
