Steering Gear INTERMEDIATE SHAFT >>> R & R . . .

.....Hey all ; looking into helping out a neighbor with this repair problem before commencing to "Dive-into" it .....
>>>>> 1990 Ford Ranger XLT, Pickup, ShortBox, 2.3L eng., 4x4, 4spd w/OD, <<<<<
........as for what the title of this thread is stating is the job i have; trying to see if it is possible/feasible to just drop the steering gear box down a bit, then up bolt/loose the lower_flex joint and the upper_u-joint of the Intermediate Shaft, then just drop the whole assembly out and reinstall a Newer & tight_ assembly ......... for this is where i have found all the play/slop of in the steering wheel ! ! ! I can move the wheel back & forth upon driving down the road 1.5 to 2 inch's BEFORE the tires/gearbox even moves ! ! ! WAY...tooooo....much slop/play for driving Safely ! ! ! ! ......After troubleshooting & all, front end all snug & tight until you get up past the Gear Box / ...just past the Flex_Joint.....there is like a connection point of the two shaft's; and this is where i can see the free movement from the upper shaft, while moving the steering wheel back & forth of the play/slop.................like i have stated here earlier; thinking of just dropping the Gear Box a bit, just enough to take out this Intermediate Shaft Assembly; ..... But other's have stated to pull up/out the Steering Column as per say "text book" work, ( aka. AutoZone, etc...)..........just would like some input from other's out there that have done this and could suggest/comment for Help, .......
.......thnx in advance.......
