why did the motor blow? If it is due to a mechanical failure then that should be covered under warranty. How many miles on the truck?

craigintexas 02-10-2009 08:47 AM

Well, when the rad first blew and leaked all my coolant I stopped immediately, refilled the rad and let it idle. It seemed fine, but when I started again the engine blew. Seems the first incident probably blew the two turbo coolers. It's about $3100 to replace the rad and two turbo coolers that blew and who knows how much to replace the parts of the engine that are damaged.

So far every report I have read indicated the radiator starts to leak gradually. Did you ever notice any drops or are you claiming the radiator massively destructed? Where is the radiator broken? Its very possible the damage was already done to the radiator prior to installing the Venturi Tee. As Senix asked, how many miles? What blew on the engine besides the turbo coolers? Were you towing at the time? After you filled the radiator how many miles did you drive before the engine "blew"? Definitely need more details. As for support, I cant recall anyone else blowing their engine from a busted radiator, all the stories I have heard/read indicate slow leaks.

Dealer just did mine last week.

HMMMMM.....ever think someone is pulling your leg? Theres only one turbo cooler.......its separate from the radiator.....its also the fuel cooler.

Time for the aftermarket to build a radiator that will not leak or time for FORD to get a better supplier. Yes a nice clean Alum one built with soldier.

I decided to start a new thread since the previous one was lengthy and a bit off topic in areas. There was a lot of upset folks on here about Ford not recalling all trucks to install this Tee. I decided it was worth doing myself and to be honest this was the easiest fix I have ever done. It will take me longer to post this than it did to install the Tee.

The part # you need is 8C3Z-8B379-B and my dealer charged me full retail price of $8.65. The kit comes with the Tee, 2 tension clamps, a rubber cap and clamp assembly, a zip tie, and even instructions!!! All that for the cost of 2 gallons of fuel.

Its a very simple install, the instructions are straight forward, comes with pictures and all. The instructions tell you to remove a 13/16 piece of hose where the Tee goes but I saw no need to so I didnt. I did however remove about an inch from the line running to the radiator only because it made the line lay down a little nicer.

Here are a couple of pics of the completed project. Less than $9.00 and less than 10 minutes of time to save my radiator.

This is a close up of the Tee (see the white stripe that indicates what direction to mount it). This shows you where to cut the original line as well.

This next picture lets you see where the rubber cap goes on the degas bottle and the wire tie that holds the line to the power steering resevoir.

I would recommend that anyone with a 6.4 do this. Ford is doing it to all the trucks on the lots and for less than $9.00 its not worth fighting with the dealer to do it. For less than 10 minutes of time its not worth leaving my truck at the dealer for a whole day. I hope this helps anyone that has been thinking about doing this themselves.

Thanks caprang,

I'm going to correct my dealer installed venturi tee. Just checked mine and it is wrong...

What problems could happens if it is installed backwards? Any level problems in the degas bottle? Water leaks?

Everyone, check yours. It's not hard to do. There is actually writing on each connection to tell you what hose goes where. Not sure how the dealer could've messed this up, but oh well it happens...

senix 02-28-2010 04:51 PM

mine is on correct. kinda hard to mess it up really. But I can see that happening.

John7894 02-28-2010 07:34 PM

If there is a check valve in there do you think it could suck the degas bottle down and cause a leak from too much pressure or too much coolant in the system and not the degas bottle where it belongs?

I purchased my truck used a month ago and just came acrossed this discussion. After reading it, I went out to the parking lot and checked mine. Here's what it looks like.

I currently have 33k miles on the truck. Funny thing is I asked for all updates and maintenance to be completed on the truck before I drove it off the lot. I read somewhere else on this form if you already have 30k miles on it, then it's already too late to perform the T repair.

your would appear to be on correct, look at the writing on the "T". It will have wording there.

but I do see a concern. It appears your coolant is way low. Coolant should never be below the lower line and certainly never lower then the line going out of the degas bottle. You're sucking air.

hlozano 06-29-2010 09:39 AM

Thanks, I noticed that when I took the pic. I read here that NAPA carries the coolant. I just need to figure out which coolant to purchase:

I'm a little confused, what writing am I looking for on the T? And based on the pic, should I be making a run to the Ford dealership to purchase a new T?

Napa does, look at your owners manual. Or here:

look at the diesel supplement

Engine coolant -
