oil leak/ engine removal.

was walking to my truck the other day and noticed that i had a pretty good oil leak going on. looks like the oil pan gasket or the rear main seal cant really tell. my ? is do you have to pull the motor to get the oil pan out of the truck? and if i do have to pull the motor should i just put a complete gasket set on the motor?
thanks guys
Mitch

Yep, the engine needs to come out or at least be lifted about a foot. Same amount of work as pulling it IMO.

Take a look into the engine valley. If a leak occurs there it will show up as a rear main seal leak. BTW: Rear main seals are not prone to leaking.

X2. Check the valley of death! (first)
There is a hole in the back of the block, Fluids make there
way down from it.

I had that problem were I thought it was the rear main seal but like what was said look in valley. I pulled the trans and replaced the seal and still had the problem it ended up being the turbo orings and I pulled the tranny for no reason!!:-banghead So look in the valley first:)!!!!

Ya it sucked bad but you either learn the hard way or get on here and do some research and learn from the best. Me being hard headed thinking that that has to be what it was and boy was I wrong and PI***D OFF!!!!! But I got it figured out and now its good.

90% of the time its the turbo pedastool, whether its the o-rings or the ebp valve its in the pedastool. i have only replaced a small handful of rear main's on 7.3's they just dont go bad. and the oil pan will rot out before the silicone sealant lets go.

:-hijacked are there any kit to fix the o-rings or the ebp valve its in the pedastal? part #?

I know the pedestal o-rings are standard rings the EBP valve I am not sure. I would imagine they are no different than the ones at the hardware store.
