Picked up a 4.6L
So I just bought a 2004 F150 with the 4.6L. It has 67K miles on it. Should I clean the mass air flow, change the tranny fluid/filter, coolant flush and fill. etc? Anyone use a specific type of coolant or fluid for this? What type of engine oil do these motors like?
Does it have an IAC (idle air control) that can be removed and cleaned as well? Carb cleaner goes a long way.... Cory |
Yes to all questions. It could stand to have a spark plug change to be on the safe side but put in what came out and stay away from the fancy stuff. Look in the owner's manual for what fluids you should be using. Myself I use full synthetics from Amsoil. I've got 37k and have done all you asked about. I drive it hard as it is fun.8D

i would say no to cleaning the iac and the maf, or throttle body, carb cleaners will deteriorate the coatings on them and cause failure, short term yes only to get the truck running if stuck but to last a while just replace the maf and iac.

Electrical contact cleaner can clean the elements of the MAF with no damage.

Where is the MAF on my truck? Inside the air intake somewhere? I cleaned my throttle body and that made a world of difference. Also installed a K&N drop in filter. Looked to me that the previous owner had the original motorcraft filter in it and everything.
Truck idles smooth and has some get up and go now. Would like to clean the MAF too I would think. Cory |

Just be careful to not touch the element wires inside the MAF with nothing but the contact cleaner. They are easily broken if disturbed with physical contact. |
