E450 Motorhome Rear Differential ID
 

Last Friday, I was at the mechanic having my rear VSS changed (another thread) and discovered that the fluid in the rear diff looks like it needs changed. The mechanic wasn't prepaired for this fix, so I opted to take it home and do the flush myself.
How do I ID the diff so I can get the correct gasket before opening it (if it uses one)??
What kind of gear lube is recomended?? Anything special I should know??
Anything else I should do in there while it's open??

I believe the e450 MH chassis uses a dana 110 or bigger axle, meaning it has a drop out center section. The lube should drain through a plug. Not sure what fluid, but often it is tagged on the rear.

You didn't mention the year, profile sez 2000. Is that correct for your E450?

There are two possible rear ends. The 1990/2002 Ford Truck Parts Catalog sez:

1996 thru 2002 (prolly later, dunno for sure), uses the Dana Model 286 (80) which has an 11.25" ring gear.

On 2000's only, Ford also offered the Dana Model 267 (70). This rear end has a 10.50" ring gear.

The AXLE code will be listed on the Certification Label prolly located on the door jamb (B pillar). Post the code. I will decode it, and post the info.

Your owners manual will have all the quantities of the fluids listed (trans, rear end, fuel tank etc.).

If you don't have the owners manual, you can get a new original from helminc.com.

Yes to ND, it is a 2000, E450. I'll get over to it probably tomorrow and get the numbers. It was an incomplete (cab & chassis) truck, as it is a MH, although the info should still be there. I know it was built in 06/99.

There also should be a tag either on axle housing or on the diff itself.will give mod# serial # and ratio. If it is a dana with a drop out center (Hodgekiss) drain plug is on bottom.If there is a rear cover (salsberry) you drain by removeing cover.Don't worry about gasket a good silicone sealant works just clean mateing sufaces good.And depending on where you live,temp wise,Any good 85/140 or 85/90 will work or if you want go synthetic.
