Help with VIN decode
Not sure I even have the right number. Photo attached. Is this it or should I keep looking?
TAAA5340 B https://www.ford-trucks.com/user_gal...id=193802&.jpg Thanks for the help. |
that doesn't look like a VIN
the tag for the 56 sitting here is F10V6K31046 the VIN for my 55 is F10D5D25965 Sam |
I'll keep looking. Should be somewhere on the frame, right? 54F100

should be on the top rail, mostly passenger side between the front axle and the cab (have to pull the inner fender to see it)..
or same on drivers side (not very often), or on the trailing edge of the front cross member (some have reported).. so far, all mine are on the passenger side, top of the chassis. behind the front axle should start F10?4?nnnnn for u, 5th char is a 4, last 5 are the numeric serial. Sam |
Thanks. I'll check the chassis. Glove box was removed before I acquired the truck. There is a sticker on the inside of the glove box door that is hard to read but it looks to have engine oil recommendations. Can't make out anything that resembles a VIN plus it looks more like a label than a plate. As far as the frame rail, I'll look again. The inner fender apron obscures most of the frame rail where you suggest I look. I'll try it with a mirror first and see if I can spot it. Thanks again for the help.

I was able to pull the fender and inner fender today and get a very good look at the frame rail and was not able to see anything resembling a VIN #. I got the wire wheel to it and cleaned it up real good but no luck. I checked both the top of the frame rail as well as the face(outside) and did not see anything. The TAAA number I was questioning before looks to be a part number stamped on the spring rear bracket. I've checked the frame rail on the passenger side from the cab to the front bumper.
Is there a chance it is on the inside of the frame rail or possibly the bottom. I can see the bottom fairly well and took a brush to it but it doesn't look to be there either. Any other suggestions before I move to the driver's side and pull that fender/inner fender and look there? The # on the title reads FLOV4A19998 I still want to verify the number on the truck against what the title says but maybe you can decode this number for me in the meantime. Thanks |
Mike,
I found the VIN for my -54 stamped on the large crossmember that goes underneath the radiator, closer to the passenger side. The number you provided looks "close" but maybe the "L" is actually a "1". Here's a link to some good reference material, including a VIN decoder on Georges' "Earl's World" http://www.clubfte.com/users/earl/Re..._Material.html If is is F1OV4A19998 then it's something like this: F10=F-100, 1/2 ton V=239 V-8 engine 4=1954 A=assembled in Atlanta 19998=consecutive unit number beginning with 10001 Good Luck! |
Hey Kent,
Thanks for the feedback. I checked the driver's side frame rail last night and did not see anything there either. I still need to take the wire wheel to it and clean it thoroughly but my first inspection did not reveal anything resembling a VIN. I agree that the first number should be a "1" but it is typed onto the title as an "L" capital letter. This makes me think that the title was somehow reissued and they mistook the 1 for a lower case L and capitalized it since the VIN started with the letter F, they thought the 1 was an L. That might explain the dicrepancy but Perry Mason I'm not. I'll look on the cross member you suggest. I hope I can find it there. |
