F150 gas cap installation

HI
I need help. I thought I saw a recent post with pictures and instruction on how to remove the old gas cap and install a new one but I cannot not find it.

I recently purchased a locking gas cap for my F150 XLT 2007 which has a screw like button-tab attached to a cable around the cap. It looks like the old one should pop out and the new one poped in. Is this correct and how hard is it to do??:-huh

The Original Cap Tether Has To Be Cut Off. The New Caps Tether Is Just Installed In The Originals Tether Hole. You Crimp The Two Pieces Together.
My Local Dealer Charges $56.50 For The Motorcraft Cap With The Ford Logo Metal Lock Cover. Boy, What A High Price.

whoa whoa the original tether does NOT have to be cut off. Place your thumbs on the screw part that goes into the fuel filler. Place your fingers on the area of the cap where the tether goes all the way around the cap and squeeze hard. The cap will separate and you can just pull the tether over the bottom part of the new locking cap and it will go into the groove. BTW my new locking cap from Advance was $21

If you start popping a code for your evap system, you know where to start looking first...

I bought a locking cap from Autozone few months ago, I haven't poped any codes as of yet.

In our computers at work, we show that a tech bulletin was sent out by Ford regarding certain gas tanks may need to be replaced and will throw codes if not replaced. It is my understanding that this is an known issue and Ford will pick up the tab.

If you already knew this than sorry, if not, I can post the tech bulletin.

Cool, and if you do, then you know to start by putting your original cap back on...that's all I meant.

I tried a locking cap from Autozone on my '05. It immediatley gave me a code on the dash. I took it off, and disconnected the battery and it went off and stayed off. Took the cap back and he said the light would have went off anyhow after about 50 starts. so still have the original cap on it.

That's cool, I saved my original cap. 8D

I've driven mine for several weeks since the locking cap. Never had a code. I visually inspected the caps and they were identical.

Smokey; where did you get your cap?

On my odometer Check Gas Cap comes up when I crank up I also noticed the check engine light came on about the 3rd time I cranked up. Could this be related to the gas tank problem? If so could I get a copy of the bulletin you mentioned?

It sounds like your gas cap is loose, off, or you changed it with a non-factory one...It's not sealing.

same old cap seems to fit fine.

If it's not the cap, then you have an evap leak somewhere in the system. Grab a propane tank (the small brazing kind, and do NOT light it) and run it around the hoses, and engine. When the idle picks up, BINGO...You found your leak. Normally I'd say "bring it to me, and I'll fix it", but I'm off today.
