Removing AC compressor - serpentene belt length
My 1989 F150 302 AC compressor is history. Removed it and I wanted to know do I need to install a idler pulley in place of the AC comp. or can I just use a smaller serpentene belt? Does anyone sell a kit to replace the AC compressor with a plain old pully? :-wink

You'd have to look at where the belt will lie if it runs straight - it might rub something & wear out instantly. I'd advise just unplugging the clutch & leaving the compressor attached to the engine. It's gotta be the cheapest idler kit you'll find.

You should be able to use it without the A/C. I would hit a junkyard (or used car lot) and find one without A/C and look at the decal under the hood for the proper routing. If at a junkyard, I would take the decal. Then just order the "without A/C" belt from a parts store. If by chance that does not fit correctly, buy one of those emergency belts that snap/hook together. Then remove and measure it. Make sure the tensioner is in good shape. |

ya unhook the compressor. if the clutch is locked pull it out. or then again instead of buying that belt take a pieces of thin rope and run through your pullys minus the a/c and messure its lenth. and your done....

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 19-Dec-02 AT 00:16 AM (EST)]Thanks for all the suggestions, I ended up just eliminating the comp.altogether and going with a smaller belt. It took a couple of trips to auto parts store but a shorter belt works fine!:-X10

What belt was it? I am removing my A/C from my 1990 F-150 and will probably try to use a new belt if I can. If you tell me what size your belt was I may have a a good start on it.
BTW: I have a 351W EFI is your engine the same size? or are you running a 302? |
