7.3 Conversion ?!
I have a 400,000 mile motor in my 2001 F350 dually just starting to smoke enough from ring blow by to keep me from driving it.
I found a 1997 motor for very little and only has 100,000 miles on it. I heard that the differences between the motors is the HPOP / injectors / turbo housing AR / and some wiring. Does anyone know. . .are all these things swapable to the long block from the 1997 motor ? even the high pressure oil pump ? Should I still use these items at 400,000 miles ? Anyone out there have experience with this ? Thanks |
what are you swapping it in to? there is a guy in one of these forums not sure if it is this one has a obs 7.3L in a superduty
|
Converting from the newer 7.3 BACK to an older but less mileage 7.3
|
There is a lot of differences.
Smaller injectors, smaller HPOP, different wiring. If you keep the single shot injectors in there you have to get a special tune for your Superduty or it won't idle very good if at all. |

I do know that there are some differences on the 94.5 to something like 96???? engines with the way that the HPOP is fed, (I think) I work on VW and Audi for a living and only know my 1999 F550. All other little details like what you are wanting to know, I have no experience. |
Everything should bolt right up, you will just need a cover for the fuel pump hole in the valley on the 97. There are some differences in the block and crankshaft, but as long as you are using the 97 bottom end together you should be all right.

Ok . . cool.
What is the hole there from ? Is there a pump on the 97 thats not on the 2001 ? |

No. . . Im not sure.
Just guessing due to the mileage. What would cause oil to suddenly start getting by the injectors ? |

Just guessing due to the mileage. Have you replaced your injectors at all? How long have you been driving it? All 400k? Just asking. How much smoke do you get out of your oil fill at idle when you have the cap off? |
No smoke comming from oil fill cap . . but plenty of smoke at idle at the tail pipe. Seems to clear up a little when the motor gets warmed up. . . im def. thinking blowby.
Not sure if the guy before me changed the injectors . . but I havent so probably have been in there all that time. Should I just get new ones when swaping my stuff over to the 1997 engine ? |
Injectors on a 97 are different... Congrats on getting 400k out of it though

Here's what i would do- It would make a KICK ASS setup compared to what you have now. Since 400k is on your factory stuff, i'd say its time to replace the high pressure oil pump, and at least the injectors. Take the front accesory brackets (possibly the front cover, too) off your engine, and swap it onto the 97 engine. Also remove the stamped steel intake plenums off the heads (careful not to get anything down inside) and swap over the ones from the 00. Also the exhaust up pipes (leave the manifolds if they are not leaking), and the turbo pedestal, as well as turbo. Make sure that is not beyond specs, its been spun around a few gazillion times with that many miles. You'll also need to swap out the entire wiring harness (not a big deal, just unplug the connectors), and change over the oil/water temp sensors, they use a one-wire type on the older ones. Buy a Pulse HPOP from Dieselsite.com, its a higher output than stock for not much considering other options. Also, a $650 set of stage one, single shot injectors (remanned, but like new) from Diesel Performance Plus home. I have a set of them in a 95 dump truck, it really WOKE that truck up, on stock turbo and stock oil pump it gets for a truck like that, even with 40t and 60t. Good luck, we're here if you need us!

im not hatin on kris's post, but i dont think that the pulse is going to be available to the public till the end of the year, thats just what i have heard. i could be very wrong about this though.
