guage reading question

Hi all,

99 f350 7.3 c/c dually 6613 mod and Edge Evo set at 80hp 140 ft/lbs
I then switched the Evo to 40 hp 100 ft/lbs and there was no difference with any readings.

cruising on the hiway today at 65 I noticed a couple of things.
outside temp was 82

1--rpm seemed hi at 2200
2--boost was a constant 6-7 lbs
3--egt was 600
4--tranny was 130 seems hi to me

If I sped up to 70 the only changes were,

1--rpm 2400
2--boost 7-8 lbs

is this correct? if not any ideas? the tranny temp is bothering me a little, seems hi for an empty truck.

thanks in advance
John M T

Sounds good to me. What does the EGTs get to when you go to WOT? Where is your probe installed at?

You must have 4.10 gears? Just like mine, same RPM.

Hey Jim,

Yes I have 4:10's so all the gauges and the tach sound 'bout right to you?

WOT HA, I'd burn 20 gallons for 5 minutes of fun. LOL that would be like 3.33 gals per mile.

another question. I will be installing a John Woods valve body. this is what everyone here is suggesting, I haven't ordered yet, but wanted to know if these are like a set of "canned tunes" one tune fits all. or is it custom to vehicle needs?

Thanks

John M T

3--egt was 600 Thats perfect
4--tranny was 130 seems hi to me Anything below 220 is fine. Empty cruising, about 60-80 above ambient air temp is good.

I installed the BTS-VB in mine. But I have heard good things about John woods. This is a valve body that goes into the transmission. If you are talking about a chip/tuner that is entirely different. Again, I and most here run the DP-TUNER, and it is a custom tuner, not one of the off the shelf tuners you buy at the speed shops.

Which are you talking about?

John M T 06-12-2008 01:33 PM

I'm asking about the John Woods valve body.
not a tuner.

I was referencing a tuner with canned tunes-generic-as a comparison only.

I was wondering if the valve body is custom "tuned" for the specific needs of the vehicle.

thanks

Yes, you can say that. This valve body is only for the 7.3, so it is a custom unit. The valve body will give better shifting and will keep the trans from slipping, which makes heat. You will have better shifting and a cooler trans. Will ever last longer.

Those numbers are all good. Boost is a little high, but that because you've got the lower 4:10 gears, so that's normal. Trans is fine. Nothing to worry about.

Related question- cruising flat ground @ 65 mph today (my speedo is off because of my tires)
RPM's were just under 2000
Boost- 3.5-4 lbs
Pyro- 525-550
Trans- right under 140
This is with 3.73's and an auto trans... sounds like I'm in the normal range?

miller_feed 06-13-2008 01:50 PM

Yes, you are looking good.

Dieselmanor 06-13-2008 01:50 PM

Yes, No worries. Enjoy.

Tranny temps can vary

I have the huge 6.0 cooler for my transmission. I also have a F350 dually with the 4:10 gearing. My temp maxed when it was 105 outside and 9500# of fifthwheel behind me in the mountains. It went to a whopping 165*. I have been told that anything below 180 is good, so I figured 165 was good for a max under the worst conditons. Generally I have heard that if you are 75 degrees or less than the outside temp you are fine. Even upwards of 110, I maxed out at 165. However, I steadly see 135 to 140 cruising with the camper behind me, with the outside temps in the 80's and sometimes 90's. Lately running around empty, I have seen 125 to 140 but it has been 90+ outside. I can also see when it is getting warmer outside by the tranny temp gauge. I have the lie-o-meter and when my outside goes up 3 or 4 degrees, the tranny does the same proportionally. I haven't really seen a drastic increase with or without a load, BUT I have noticed that when I am empty, if I am cruising around and it runs say 130 at 65 mph, I run it up to 80 ish or above up the interstate, I see a climb of about 10 to 15 degrees cause of the speed and possibly cause I am pushing more air.....just my theory and the pennies worth of experience... In short, I would think you are fine with the numbers you presented...
