i was just wondering, would it be ok to add the lye to the oil first and then pour the methanol in?? or is it absolutely necessary to mix the lye & methanol before adding it to the oil?

You MUST mix the Methanol and Lye first. Adding one at a time will not work.

do you think i can mix it in a clean 5 gallon gas can (plastic)?

Yes, I've mixed it in 5 gallon buckets years ago. I now have a dedicated mixer that mixes 30 gallons at a time.
