Clogged Filter

Hey Fabman (Don) I am using 10 micron sock filters to filter out the Magnesol. They clog up real fast. Do you think I can use a 5 gallon pail filter and scrape the magnesol off as it builds up? If so, how large (micron) can I get and still filter enough to prevent shearing with my Harbor Freight pump? Thanks Don. Tom

Yes Tom, you can do it that way! :)

Tom,
I got tired of that problem after the second batch! Now what I do is after the mixing is done I pull out my paddle and let it settle over night. Then I use a section of 3/4" pipe attached to the hose of my pump and pump the bio off the top of the settled magnesol, leaving the sludge in the bottom to be scooped and washed out later. Doing it this way I can get several batches out of one set of filters

When you suck the bio off the top, do you have a filter in line before it gets to the pump? If so, what micron do you use? Thanks Tom

Theres no filter on the pump. What I do is I have an extra portable pump thats the same as on the processor that I use as a transfer pump. I pump the bio off the top and into a four-way fitting that I hang four bags on and that drains into another drum. You dont have to worry about the sheer effect because all the magnesol has settled to the bottom of the mixing drum.
I then circulate it from the bottom of the drum through the 1 micron bags for an hour or so. From there I pump through the 1 micron absolute can filter into my storage tank.
With this method I've been able to skip the 5 micron bags and just use 1 micron bags.
