Big Block Flathead

Ford made a 337 cubic inch flathead V8 - 3.50 bore x 4.375 stroke - that powered '48-'51 F7 and F8 heavy trucks and '49-'51 Lincolns. It is a huge engine weighing 900 lbs. There are a few outfits such as Dove and Genesis that custom cast engine parts such as engine blocks and heads. There are several outfits such as Crower that make custom billet con rods cranks. There are numerous custom piston makers. Somebody should have these outfits make a big block flathead based on the 337 for '48-'53 F1 and F100 pickup trucks. With aluminum heads , aluminum intake , and headers maybe they could get the engine weight down to around 700 lbs. A 3.75 bore x 5.00 stroke would give 442 cubic inches - which is huge for a flathead engine.

You should find a tank flathead supposeable they were 460's. They just increased the size of the whole engine.

Nathan, the Ford model GAA WWII tank engine is a 5.40 bore x 6.00 stroke - 1100 CID DOHC 60 degree V8 weighing 1560 lbs wet.It puts out 500 HP gross,450 HP net @ 2600 RPM ; and torque is 1040 gross,950 net @ 2200 RPM.It has 4 valves per cylinder, and the 4 cams are driven by "vertical" shafts. The GAA was derived from the Rolls-Royce - Packard "Merlin" 1650 CID SOHC V12 aircraft engine. The Merlin has the same bore x stroke as the GAA.The Merlin also has 4 valves per cylinder, but each pair of valves is driven by one cam lobe.A transverse triangular truss - with one corner at the cam lobe, and a corner at each valve stem tip - drives each pair of valves. The pairing of the Merlin intake and exhaust valves is perpendicular to the pairing of valves in a DOHC like the GAA.
