how hard is gas hitting you?

with the gas crunch as bad as ever, the people that will be hit the hardest are those not making that much money. as such a lot of us younger people probably arent making all that much money anyways. im 18 and a fast-food worker (though ditching that job for another here soon), so i was wondering, how is everyone else doing?

for me, gasoline is a large portion of my paychecks. i have cut down on buying stuff and dont drive around as much as i do, but with gas as it is, im afraid there isnt much more i can do to divert more of my income to gas. its 10 miles from my house to town, and driving back and forth is something i dont really like to do unless its for work or hanging out with my friends (which is a problem as many of them dont drive and usually want me to drive them around, something ive had to put the hammer down on as well).

thinking about the cost of it, i burn as much money as i did when i drove my dads F350 (10mpg and gas at 2.60/gal) as i do now (~15-17mpg and 4.24/gal).

Im only having a small probablem, i drive to school everyday and the days i dont i try to car pool. the problem is most days i have to work after school or i have some other sort of extra curricualar activity that requires me to drive. i have a ford explorer 4.0 liter V6 and i get maybe at most 19mpg if im driving consistantly. but i also live in a really hilly area and then getting into town or in the city i get a really crappy mpg. now right now gas here hit the highest ive seen 3 75 yesterday. so im not into to bad a place, plus with summer ill be working full time and 2 other jobs so i dont see gas prices hitting me too hard. im also considering buying a motorcycle.

fasttrucker01 05-20-2008 07:05 PM

that would be you best choice to buy a motorcycle I have one a 2008 suzuki 650F that is a nice bike bought it brand new and havent got it compltly broke in yet and it gets about 42mph bought it with no miles on it. the only problem is that I have to pay for it and that is $8000. I am only 17, so after I get back from europe this summer I am going to have to work long and hard to pay it off.

texastech_diesel 05-20-2008 09:56 PM

You're going to Europe.. and have a crotch rocket. An eight GRAND bike at that, brand spankin' new. And you're seventeen. I don't feel bad for you?

Coulda bought a used bike like me for a LOT less. Got the title to mine for a grand.

I'm a 22 y/o college student, get 13 mpg outta my truck, and I'm working the life out of it at $4.40 to get enough to stay in school. Basically, I'm getting murdered and all I can see is grad school getting pi$$ed away hauling lumber. The bike is nice, but with the new helmet, insurance, and title hit this month I'm not gonna see the benefit 'til July at least. But that's life. I work hard, and one day I'm gonna get out of contrustion jobs and go sit in an air conditioned office and never look back. I think this count's as doing my time in a blue collared shirt.

I am sixteen and i have a part-time job but make good money,(don't have to pay for gas; YET) but my dad wont let me have a bike. He wont even let me have a quad, even if i pay for it. What a dork.

I drive my 1980 Mustang 3.3 daily and get about 18 mpg. I've cut down on my driving as much as possible, so at a minimum I can get away with spending $40-50 on gas per week. That is exactly why I'm looking for a Bronco II instead of a full size. I work at my local Ford dealership detailing so I'm doin ok for cash.

depends on how many in this section pay for their own gas :-)

I am 18, I pay for mine have been since I got my license and yeah it sucks. I was driving my 79 F150 with a 5.0 302 getting 18ish a bit under probably becuase it was during winter until I got hit by a semi truck (not my fault) and now I am driving my parents 95 suburban they lent me until I can get another car though I think i might buy it off them (yeah I know not a ford, but psh) and I get about 18 because I do mostly highway sometimes in the 20s if I never touch the town. I was driving my friends 99 Explorer Sport for a couple weeks and that was a nice relief on the check book I must say. Depending on my work schedules I can spend a lot or nothing in gas, but mostly a lot.

I have the same job, only I work on Saturday's and the rare after school day, and 3 days a week during the summer. My truck gets about 13-14 mpg, but luckily I like 5 miles away from my school, so my 2 tanks will last me quite a while. If I had to pay my full insurance I would be in trouble, but for the most part I am doin ok.

It doesn't affect me that much.

If your buddies want you to drive them around, make them pay for gas.

I am 21 and in my last year of college. Diesel fuel is kicking my butt... I am close enough to walk to campus so I dont drive a whole lot but when I do (home, food, clothes etc) it drains my account dry. I work on campus for $8/hr so it helps a little but if fuel goes up anymore I dont know if I will be able to go home for a while.

Dean88 05-26-2008 01:02 PM

Most of my paycheck goes to gas. I put almost 45 miles on my truck a day going to school work and then back home.

dukedrummer89 05-27-2008 09:14 PM

Yea, gas prices sucks, im probably gonna get a used bike in the 4k range here within the next couple weeks. Even if I dont save any money, i can always resell the bike, its hard to due that with used gasoline:-missingt
