292 Tune-up specs

I picked up a 64 F100 this past Monday from a friend in need of money. The truck runs pretty good and I drove it every day this week. I spent some time under the hood today trying to fix a few things.
1. I adjusted the valves by rotating the engine by hand and removing all of the slack in the pushrods. I know this isn't right but I don't have the specs for valve clearance.
2. I reran a few wires to the coil and Voltage regulator since they were cracked and taped all over the place.
3. Replaced the gaskets and crossover pipe on the exhaust.
4. Hooked up a tach and adjusted idle mixture to highest RPM per side.

Now for the questions.
1. How do I set the timing since there is no timing pointer that I could see and what degree would that be set at?
2. How are the cylinders numbered and what is the firing order?
3. Gm uses dwell to set timing. What should the point gap be set at and could I check this with a dwell meter?
4. Are there any tricks to adjusting the Ford 2V carb? I already replaced the accelerator pump gasket and ajusted the choke and reinstalled the oil bath air cleaner.

My data plate on the door says I have a 292 with a 2bbl carb (thanks to jowilker for the decode from his FTE site) and the number on the block is EDB 6015E (or its 8015E I can't tell)

Some help would be helpful until I can get my hands on a 64 shop manual.

I have found some info regarding tune up specs for the 292 but wanted to confirm them with some one. Theses come from Chiltons 1954 -1963 and are for a 62 year model.
Point gap = .015
Dwell = 27
Timing = 6 deg BTDC
Valve adjust = .019

I re-adjusted my valves to this number and they rattle like a damn diesel. Is this normal?

Check the 21 feb post from Rudy. I posted the valve setup from my shop manual. And yes they are noisey.

Did you recieve the info about cylinder numbering and firing order? I'm attempting to crack our 292 and we want to confirm the way we have it is correct, because it's not starting. Thanks.

>1. How do I set the timing since there is no timing pointer >that I could see and what degree would that be set at?
The timing pointer is a bost on item, attached to the top drivers side of the water pump... probably try a junkyard.
Also, all the timing marks are on the damper, not the pointer.

>2. How are the cylinders numbered and what is the firing order?
"The cylinders are numbered from front to rear on the right bank 1, 2, 3, 4 and on the left bank 5, 6, 7, 8. The firing order is 1-5-4-8-6-3-7-2" from the 1964 shop manual.

>3. Gm uses dwell to set timing. What should the point gap be >set at and could I check this with a dwell meter?
"New breaker points can be adjusted with a feeler gauge, scope or a dwell meter. If a scope or a dwell meter is used to adjust new points, be sure the points are in proper alignment. Also, set the contact dwell to the low setting. New points must be set to the low dwell as the rubbing block will wear down slightly while seating to the cam." 1964 Shop manual.
Specs:
Breaker arm spring tension (Ounces)... 17-20
Contact spacing (Inches)...0.014-0.016
Dwell Angle at Idle Speed...26*-28.5*

I just rebuilt mine with stock jets, and put both mixture screws 1.5 turns out from a bottomed screw and it runs GREAT! (Until it blew a head gasket...)

Idle speed should be 500-550 in Neutral (stick or auto.) and for the automatic drive range: 475-525.

Timing: 6*
-"For altitude operation, and/or to obtain optimum engine performance and fuel economy, the initial ignition timing may be advanced 5* over the 'normal' setting. No further improvement in engine performance or fuel economy will be achieved by advancing beyond this point. Advance the timing progressively until engine detonation (spark knock) is evident under actual road test acceleration. Retard the timing until the detonation (spark knock) is eliminated. If the individual requirements of the vehicle and/or the use of sub-standard fuels dictate, the initial timing may have to be retarded from the recommended settingto eliminate detonation (spark knock). If retiming is necessary, it should be done progressively and not to exceed 2* BTC." 1964 Shop Manual.

Valve lash;
Cold: Intake... 0.019
Exhaust... 0.019

Hot: Intake and Exhaust... 0.018
All out of the 1964 Shop manual...

Hope I've helped :-)

Thanks to both of you. I'll pass the info to my son this evening. He is hooking up the carb's & fuel pump this evening and will try to start the motor this weekend. Anyother "words of advice" prior to then is always appreciated.

I would like to thank all of ou for helping out with tune up specs I requested. It helped out more people than me.
I had already found this info when I recieved my manual and now drive it daily. Thanks again.

Yes. Perfect. Keep in mind this thing had solid lifters. The sound is part of the ambience of the Y-block. To some, it's an anvil chorus. To others, it's noise. :D

I just read the same thing the other night when I was adjusting mine. Go by the text and NOT the narration from the illustration. The text has the correct listing.
