DIY project versus Turn-Key system ?

Hi all, been interested in this for some time, but now getting serious with the high diesel prices.

I had originally planned on a DIY system from plans as I'm very mechanically / technically inclined. But now I'm looking at perhaps going in on a "turn-key" system with 2-3 other guys near me.

I've looked at a lot of the turn-key systems out there, and many have told me to steer clear of the plastic container systems and the somewhat "entry-level", sub-$3K systems like Freedom Fueler, etc.

It was recommended to me to look more at the steel container systems due to heat issues during the process, and to look at the "mid-level" systems in the $3K-$5K with wash systems.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Rgds,

A good quality hdpe container will last a long time. I've used them at work with chemicals and they do hold up for a good amount of time. That's what I'm using right now, 3 plastic gas jugs.

I appreciate the feedback. I had suspected that. I found it hard to believe that if the vast majority of turn-key systems out there were HDPE plastic systems, that it was an issue.

We're probably going to go with a 40 gallon system with dry wash, that's expandable as we get comfortable with process.

Many thanks!

There are some who say that the glycerine adheres to HDPE and not steel. So, steel is best because your processor is clean for the next batch. Check into using scrap propane tanks. A guy built me one with used propane tanks that will run out 100 gallons a batch. We are drywashing with Amberlite.
