biodiesel in home oil furnace?
 

i just bought a house and it has oil heat. i was wondering if anybody has put homebrew bio into their home heating oil tank. i was also thinking of mixing a couple gallons of used motor oil per 100 gallons of bio into the home oil tank. am i asking for a disaster or may it work, with or without the used motor oil? thanks in advance.

I don't know about the used motor oil but if you have good quality biodiesel it will work great. It will clean your furnace fuel system also, I have been told a couple of different things from start with 30% biodiesel and 70% biodiesel and work you way to full biodiesel to just dump the biodiesel in and have a spare furnace fuel filter on hand. Is your tank inside or outside? If it is outside and you deal with cold temperatures it could gel and the off the shelf diesel anti-gel wont work either. I really like the Utah biosiesel website, I have found it very helpfull.

IMHO, I wouldn't use motor oil in the home furnace not a good idea, Health risk, soot, clogging, etc... the detergents will gum up making a mess of things.

Agree........ high grade bio-diesel will work, but like already mentioned, keep a filter or two and spare nozzles handy.

Thought it was illegal to burn used motor oil in a residential heating unit due to the concentrated lead being pumped into the atmosphere.

thanks for the replies. i was just planning to dump a 2 or 3 gallons into a full furnace tank and i figured that might dillute it enough to be ok. it seems that's not a good idea, so i'll skip that, no problem. my oil tank is in the basement of the house, so i don't think i'll have gelling issues. spare filters and nozzles sounds like a good plan. thanks!
