truck pulls
 

I went to the truck pulls with a few buds. One had a 97 PSD 4x4 5spd- he did decent. The other buddy has a 74 int 1 ton pickup with a CHEVY 292 6 and granny 4spd. He finished mid track, this kind of inspires me to pull my 78 f250 300. How would they compare my 300 4spd to his 292 4spd. Would I finish mid track if he did??

There are a lot of variables there. 4wd or 2wd? What are both of your gear ratios? What kind of tires do you bot have? It depends on sled and how much weight they put on it initially. I have a 1980 with a 460 in it that is basically bone stock and depending on the sled I have finished everywhere from 290ft to 150ft. If ratios and tires are similar then I would expect you to finish around where he did, you would probably have a slight advantage.

I have WAY better tires than he does. I have 3.73's/Np435, he has ummmm it turns 3k rpm at 60mph with 29'' tires ans a chevy sm465 trans. the wierd part is he said he "ran out" of power even in low gear in which he pulled about 148'' it pulled him down till he stalled. I wouldn't think anything would pull my 78 300/np435 down like that in low she is a beast. He NEVER had a tracton issue eather, he never spun. uuuuu ooohhh
We are both 2wd the sled was 32,000lbs, he took off with it easy

Ya if he is turning 3k at 60mph then he has a pretty low ratio. But the NP435 is an amazing tranny with a nice creeper granny gear. You should probably take him especially if you have better tires. Traction is huge and most people don't realize it. The weight of the sled isn't really anything at the start ofthe pull, but I find it interesting that it bogged down without spinning the tires. That is usually the sign of a well-worn engine with a poor ignition coil and plug wires. If your truck has been keep in descent condition I think you should come out on top.

I rebuilt the motor and have taken very good care of it wix filters/moble 1 oil sense then. i think it is really strong. Fires right up, idels smooth. no oil consumption in the 6 month oci's- aboout 1500miles between changes

I wouldnt be too quick to judge your buddy yet.Its a whole different ball game when you hook to a sled.Theres just to many variables to say he just plain powered out.Ive seen 1000 hp 4x4 Pro Stocks "power out".A guy i used to pull with actually set his truck up to "power out".His theory was he wanted the engine to almost stall when his tires quit turning,when his momentum stopped and he was running a 990 hp BBF,2WD mod.

1500 miles on Mobil 1?That gets a little pricey dont it?

BRH I agree completely with you about the Pro Stock trucks. Once you build them up, it is a whole new ballgame. But from the way that hae has talked, I don't think his buddy's truck is souped up too much. From what I have seen on stock trucks they either seem bogged down from the start or they go till they spin the wheels.

And ya Dustin I would go the full 3,000 miles. Unless you let your truck sit a lot, then you really don't need to pay attention to the time very much. If you change it once a year at 3,000 miles you will be fine, especially with a rebuilt, well maintained motor.

I know what you are sayin Dirtstrip.I realize we are talkin about stock trucks.What im saying is just because he "powered out" doesnt mean he has no power.Could be he was gettin a good bite.Sometimes on a hard track slicker tires are better.Ive been on tracks where we wouldve done better with slicks,no kiddin.Im just sayin watch that 292 Chevy before you talk to much they can run.Everybody can pull the hell out of a sled....until they hook on to it.

I have always said the three best motors Ford ever put in to a pickup truck were the 300 six.460 an 390 FE motor. If you had either off them in a pulling truck you would do alright. Put that truck in granny low get the RPMs up there an take off. I myself enjoy watching the 2wds pull. With the 4wds you have constantly worry about the front end. Enough weight or to much. Air pressure an such. With 2wds much less problems. I think your truck will do great. So get her ready for the next pull. Post up an tell us how you do. I think you might out do your buddy with his truck. Since you say you have better tires. My dream pull truck would be a 2wd 79 250 with a 460 in it. I would do some mods such as cam, headers. high performance carb. The whole 9 yards. Those 460s are pulling beasts like the 300 six. Got that great torque down low an like the 300 six an built like a tank. With reg maintenance them motors will run forever even if you abuse them an pull the heck out off them. Thats a Ford for you they run forever an a day with out breaking the bank. Good luck now get that truck to the next pull.
