05 Diesel in need of power steering pump please advise

Well my truck is impossible to turn at idle VERY difficult to turn while braking dangerous to stop quickly, etc.... I took my truck to the local stealership to get checked out the told me that i needed a new power steering pump. Well the pump isnt too bad only $159 but the labor is over $500 total bill was around $750 for everything.

My question is how difficult is it to change a power steering pump? I am very mechanically inclined and have great tools and shop to work with but no lift.

Any other advice, tips, etc. will be greatly appreciated. Should I go aftermarket pump or OEM?

Do a search for AGR, PSC pumps or Saginaw pumps. The owners of AGR left and formed PSC. They had some initial problems, but some have said they corrected them:

Aftermarket power steering pumps came HIGHLY recommended at one time from what I have read, but then I read one warning:

The high output AGR pumps had problems with the restriction in the hydroboost unit and died a premature death. AGR used to be run by the owners of PSC who sold it and then started a new company. The PSC units reportedly held up better but now I am hearing reports of those failing due to hydroboost restriction problems. The hydroboost needed to be sent to a firm (in CA?) for modification and then all was good. I would call them and get the story from the pros.
