Fluid and filter change on 4r70w tranny
I am hoping to change the filter on my 4r70w tranny this weekend and I was wondering how many quarts it will take to top it back up and exactly which type of mercon fluid to put in it? Also, while I'm here, the tranny has 135,000 miles on it....how long do these trannys usually last? Are they dependable?

Mine has 250K on it. If I remember correctly, it takes about 4 quarts or so. I would say get 4-5 quarts. It uses dexron III mercon. I've done mine quite a few times. I would put in 3 and then run it and see what it reads on the dipstick.

Drain the torque converter as well otherwise you're mixing old fluid with new...you can always ask the parts guy too...should be in their computer....but 5 sounds right if all your doing is dropping the pan.

Draining the torque converter sounds like a great idea but how is it done? I would love to get as much fluid out as I can.

gotta rotate the tranny until you see the drain plug (after you've removed the inspection cover) just a lil bolt is all.....

I agree with FlaresideThunder about draining the torque converter. I have done that before, but since I service mine every year, all I do is drop the pan and change the filter and add the 4-5 quarts. If you want to access the torque converter plug, you'll have to remove that little black rubber on the bottom of the bell housing. Then you'll have to bump the starter a few times until you can see the drain plug. If you do this, you will need a few more quarts.

Sounds easy enough. I'll give it a shot this weekend and hopefully I won't find anything bad when I open her up. Thanks for the help.

Not a prob that's what we're here for.
