Lost power and died 20 miles later

My 02 7.3 in a noline van lost all power to the point where it was missing and struggled to maintain 50 mph . It barely made it up inclines putting at 25 mph (on I80) . It ran fine prior to this however three weeks ago I had 12 gallons of contaminated fuel oil placed in it. The fuel filter has been changed three times after it broke down twice due to plugged filters. It is getting clean fuel to the filter, the filter is clean(it was only changed two days before). It will not start now only kicking over as if it wants to start, it did the same 70,000 miles ago when the CMP sensor went bad. When the CMP was bad however it would restart once it cooled down, no such luck this time. This is an electricians workvan and I need to get it up and running, does anybody have any advice on what I could try myself and whom I can bring it to in Monroe county, PA. Your input would be greatly appreciated.

I'd check fuel pump output (reason: the contaminated fuel you said you had awhile back)...take the line off the output side and put it in a glass jar. Turn the key on and watch the output. There is a spec for output over time, but I have forgotten it. If the output is fine at the pump, then I would check at the fuel drain. If it isn't very strong at the pump I'd drop the fuel tank (syphon the fuel out and then drop the tank...remove large ring and carefully remove pickup and fuel gauge float) and clean the pickup screen off. I bet that is the problem.

Do you have any way to check for codes? Can you check the fuel pressure? Maybe another sensor went bad? Batteries and starter good? How about the CPS?

UVC harness?

Intermittent ? I removed and rienstalled the fuel filter last night and she started however she is smoking continually white and blue with a hesitation miss. She normally didn't miss. Does anybody know the purpose of the black box thats t'd into the air cleaner line going back to the turbocharger ? The worst design ever by not relocating it on the van body diesels.

The box is there to quiet the noise. No other purpose. I took them off my vans. They are just in the way. Make sure you seal the hole completely. I did not notice the noise at all.

Thanks Bob, i took great pleasure in removing that hinderance box this morning and capping the inlet with a 2" pvc plug. What kind of fuel milage are you getting with your E line van(s) ? I can't seem to do any better than 14-15 with a 2000 lb payload.

roger, sorry but I think that is as good as it gets, especially in the winter. Vans are de-tuned because of the heat around the engine. So the performance is not like an F series. If you can get more air moving, you could put a chip or edge on it and you would have more power. Because of the lack of power you end up with your foot down a lot more to compensate and then you get worse mileage. Do you have both batteries up front?
