351m/400 flywheel interchange?

Anybody know if the 351m and 400 use the same flywheel, before I go pulling one off for no reason.I guess the balancers are different but useable. If I use a 351 flywheel and 351 balancer on a 400,everything should work out,right?Thanks.:-X25

I went to partsamerica.com and plugged in a 1980 f250 with a 400. Then I plugged in the same truck with a 351m. The numbers for the flywheel and flexplate were the same.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 29-Sep-02 AT 02:18 AM (EST)]Are you working with an auto trans or standard shift? They are the same flexplate for the auto trans for sure, and should be the same for a standard shift.

And keep whatever balancer on the motor it belongs on. I don't think you need to swap them. :-X22

I believe that the 351M has an 11" clutch, & the 400 has a 12" clutch. This will make a difference when bolting up the pressure plate if you are working on a standard shift. The holes could be transferred and drilled/tapped if req'd.
