First year for the 460?

Can anyone tell me what was the first year for the 460? Did it appear in trucks the same year as a Lincoln or Ford car?
Thanks!

First 460 appeared in Lincolns in '68, I think they started in trucks in '77

460 displacement appeared in Linconls in the early 60's I think but they didn't have the porcupine valves or ball stud rockers of the 385 series 429/460. Quite a different ballgame.

460 or 462?

You're thinking of the MEL engine design which came in 383, 430 & 462 sizes. VERY different engine. 385 engine design (370, 429, 460) was introduced in 1968 as a 429 (Thunderbird, Lincoln). 370 (heavy truck) & 460 came later (unsure exactly).

'68 for the 460 in the Lincoln, '72 in the T-Bird, '75 for the LTD, trucks '74, corrected, see below..

It was 1974 for trucks.

They ran the FE and the 460 for a couple years?

Yes they did, the '74 brochure (see next post) shows the engine list on page 14.
240, 300, 302, 360, 390 2v, 390 4v, 460.

This is interesting - I have always thought the first year for the 460 in trucks was 1973, but, V10man is correct, it is 1974, according to the brochures over at Fordification.net.

I have a 1973 super camper special with a 460 in it. It is (was) the original engine. It was built in December 1973 at the Lima plant in Ohio. I think it should have been registered in Canada as a '74, as it was likely sold to its first owner in early 1974, but the registration and the VIN lists it as a 1973 Truck.

All the literature for ford trucks I have dug up over the years on the internet pretty clearly state that 460's were not available until the 1974 production run.

I too have a 73 SCS, with a 08/73 build date in San Jose, California and factory 460.

It is coded
F354: '73 F350 Pickup 10,000 gvw
J: '73-'79 8 460 4-bbl. 7.5 Litre

Perhaps the person stamping out the vin/warranty tags put the wrong year on them, lol.

My F-250 Camper Special was assembled in San Jose in 9/73 and is titled as a 1974. And has the original 460 4V and C-6.

model year change has been in July for decades so anything built after july of any given year is the next year model year normally.

What you guys have is trucks that were miss titled probably.

I can only imagine the headache of getting the dmv to re-title a 40 year old vehicle because someone made a mistake way back when. lol

But then again, with as many as i've heard of it must have been an issue in 74.
