Need Radiator for my 65 with a 302
I am getting ready to drop in my new 302...My truck didnt come with a radiator and Im trying to find one for it. The Only radiator I have had success find was at LMC for the 65 and its just shy of 500. What I have been considering is buying a 1969 or 70 f100 radiator. the Cores according to summit are the same as the 65. I doubt it will be a direct fit. Anyone done this? The trans cooler lines look like they are in the same location. I dunno.
Another Option Ive been considering is a universal radiator from summit. Only issue there is only one has a trans cooler and it is narrower than my current raddiator support. I thought I might be able to add a trans cooler but Im not sure where or how that would hook up and work. any advice on that? If any of you have had a similar prob. and solved it Id like to hear how you did it. Thanks |
sone after i did my 305 convert i poped a leak in my 6cyl rad. I ended up at the junk yard and found one on the self from a dodge van. 3 row core with wide steel side wings just like the oe ford unit i had to trim about 1 inch from the sides and drill 4 holes so it bolted in using the frod holes. worked great i'll check to see if theres a tag on it after the snow stops.........

Look for one year range 68-79. These trucks didn't come with a 302 so none show available. I have had great success with the Modine brand.

I've got a Dodge rad in my truck and there are a few issues with running it. First off the lower tank is narrower then the top, recoring it if it needs to be rebuilt will be expesive, and 44dwarf is right about the mounting tabs being a slight bit wider. If you run a large displacement engine or one that runs hot normally it will run hotter. The radiator shop I took mine to said there were issues with the lower tank to core sealing procedures by design. Personally when I go to National City to do some yard crawling I am going to look for a few items and a different radiator.
John W has the right idea and you should look at the trucks he listed. I know I will be while I am down there with my wife. |
Yeah the radiator I was lookin at is slated for a 69 but Im guessing all those years. It comes from summit I think it was proliance.

I went to the oreilys here in town and they carry proliance/modine radiators....can get a 2 core for 135 and a 4 for 220 ...thats a stock replacement for a 67 79.
Now just need to know if it is a front mount or rear mount. it looks like a front mount because the mounts are in front of the supports leaving a empty area behind it. am I right? I will take a pic and post it. |
You don't need a 4 core. My guess would be that the rear mount is for AC use, since the evaporator went in front. I bet it wouldn't make any real difference.

Rock-auto shows a 4 core PROLIANCE Part # 436002 {#132}
Heatbuster Extreme Service model $228.79 There not bad but are made in China like everything now........ I just got one for my 96 f150 tow rig. Had to add 2 cans of paint as when tilted you could see bare copper. Bare copper = dust in a week here in the salt belt......a foot of snow on the way Yah......... |
Is proliance modine whatever a good radiator? I figured summit was carrying it along with every other parts house it must be decent
|
yes it's a good brand. Modine is best and oldest name in rads.

Another alternative, believe the radiators, size wise, same thru 1979. Take measurements, as well as dia. and location of inlet/outlet and head to local pic n pull or salvage yard. Main issue is that the radiator mounts, rear vs front, match the radiator support. 302 was installed in 73-79 Ford trucks, may help narrow field. If the radiator sets inside the radiator support housing then locating replacement may be an issue.

I didn't read every post hope I'm not stepping on toes; but I purchase a 3 row from Adavance auto for my 65 with a 76 302. The big thing is the location of upper & lower hose ports. I pay I believe $135; trucks runs at 190 degree's in parades or cruise etc.
Hope this helps. Mitch |
no not at all, great looking truck by the way.
So you guys think that a 70 model f100 302 radiator will be ok? |
