Anybody want to grow any grapes this year?
I'm going to be triming my mom's vines and will have some real good planters available..white grape, I think they will have seeds unless you graft them out...but no issues, otherwise you'll have some large Thompsons with seeds.
The pruning are good for a few weeks to plant, let me know if you want some. PS...pretty easy to start a vine...just take the pruning and put it 8-10 inches in the ground, water it and wait. |
Do you need warm weather and sunshine to grow grapes?
|
I tried some vines in Memphis, but they all died.
I know they grow around here - I guess my soil sux! |
Grapes are pretty tough, but subject to frost and freeze...if you're just looking for a few vines, it's easy top keep'em under control by covering them up when frost/freeze (assumnig the grape/bulbs are on the vine) sets in.
If soil is too compacted then just put'em in a drum with your favorite compost mix, issue though is like other things you grow, they'll only get as big as the enviropmet they are in. If you have tight/compacted soil, then dig a large hole...maybe 3 foot n diametere and 2 foot deep, then fill in with a softer loam or compost mix to allow the roots to grow out:) |
Soil here is Mississippi river silt - laid down over centuries.
But it does freeze here. |
Also...damn...I have some 1/2 barrels cut up that would work just great for you guys to fill in compost/etc, and plant away.
Dang, looks like I'm a one stop Nursery shop! |
PS..silt is okay, it's very porous <sp>, but you have towater it quite often, and it doesn't have any "oompas" in it, so you have to add minerals...i/e Mirale grow/etc...otherwise it's like growing in cardboard...just no nutients to keep things going.
|
GreyWolf, PM your address and I'll be happy to ship'em to you, should be able to get several cuttings in a USPS box and a few days in transit won't hurt them...you just have to get prepped to get'em to grow.
|
I don't think they would grow very well here because of the lack of sun in my back yard,
and the fact that the area where I live was once nothing but sand dunes, so the soil is very sandy. |

But I have a plan, it needs to have a lot of ammendments that naturally occur around here. Thank you for the offer! It will be ready over time. ~Wolf |
No worries, but just FYI...
Grapes don't need sun to "flower" and make fruit, they like the enviroment more...sure sun helps, but isn't the pre-req...otherwise there would be no Gallo;) It's not like growing good bud;) |

Well, ...one you get at the AM/PM, the other you need a doctors note for...either way, both are accessible:)
|
You mean AM/PM, or our equivalent, 7-11, doesn't sell prescription "BUD''weiser? :)
Not that I would buy prescription beer. |
Well, good ol' Louis that hangs out at the local 7/11, sells whatever you need that ails ya;)
You don't need a prescription, but you have to be quick! |
