79 4x4 400to460
I am going to swap in a 460 into my 79 4x4 but I need help finding a flywheel and pan. The trans is a 435 4 speed. I had heard a 390 flywheel will fit, is this true and what do I use for a clutch. Someone else told me a modified 400 flywheel will work but I don't think so. Also where is the best place to find a rear sump pan, truck, van, or?

The flywheel and clutch you use depends on what year the 460 is and what clutch your 400 had.If the 460 is a 78 or older you can use a 360 or 390 flywheel because it is internally balanced. The 400's used two differant clutches a diapham type and the long style and the bellhousings will only work with the kind of clutch that it came with.If I remember right the long style is about a 1/2" longer than the other one.The throw out bearing arms are also different between the two.The oil pans can be bought new pretty resonable.

400 is externally balanced,(on the flywheel and damper) 429/460 is internally balanced. 400 flywheel won't work. 360/390 are FE series. I'm not sure, But I would guess they won't work either.
Unfortunatly I dont have the right answer But I can save you the trouble of trying these two. |

I am running a 69 429 and a 73 460 both have FE flywheels and clutches.I also am running a 79 460 that is externally balanced,it has a 80's 460 flywheel on it.The 400 flywheel won,t work because of the bolt pattern being different.

There is a rear sump pan,pick-up tube and dipstick on ebay today. OH! they are brand new Ford Motorsports products. They say for Mustang but it is the truck and van pan.

what starter is used with FE flywheel on a 460?

You can use either a 400 or a 429/460 starter.I have both kinds on my trucks. The 400 starter seems a little weak on my 429 but I had to use it so that my headers would fit. They would not clear the solenoid on the 460 starter.

I went to the ford dealer today and to my surprise they had what I wanted at a reasonable price. I asked for a flywheel for a 1976 460? He asked with or without wieght? Without. How much?
$120 (canadian) The wreakers wanted $100 for a used 390 flywheel. The 460 should be the right flywheel right, or will it not fit in the 400m bellhouseing? It takes a 12" clutch and the 400m is 11.5" so maybe I am better off with the 390 flywheel?? |

I also plan to put a 460 in my 77 1/2 f250 with an np435 that previously had a 400 mated to the np435. can anyone tell me if a 460 flywheel will work or will I need to get a 390 flywheel. And what clutch will I need. I'm not sure that the clutch that is in the truck now will last until I get the 460 in. I would hate it if I had to buy a clutch now for the 400 then have to buy another for the 460. Also I read earlier that ford put two differant type clutches, can anyone tell me how I can tell what I have?

Voice of experience here. I put a 4 speed behind the 460 in my F-350. Since the 4 speed is already in your truck, you've actually got the hard part already done. You will need a 390 flywheel, a 400 disk and diaphram style pressure plate. and a 400 pilot bushing. A 429/460 flywheel will not fit in the 400 bell, it hits the bulge for the starter bolt. Also use the flywheel bolts from a Chevy, they have a shorter head that is apparently needed for clearance. I didnt try using the big heads, so I dont know if its needed, but the smaller bolts are working for me just fine. The only problems I can see you having would be if there are any differenc's in input shafts between a 360 4-speed, and a 400 4 speed. But I doubt that. Good luck, and if you have any questions, feel free to e-mail me at Jumpinford(No Email Addresses In Posts!)
