marine 460
 

are there any internal differences between the car-truck,and marine 460.I heard the marine on has a steel crank,CJ rods,different pistons.I cant find any info on the marine ones.These engines are in a cabin cruiser and ran last yr.They are earley 70's 460's.I get the # tomorrow

Most all Marine engines are built with heavy-duty internals
to withstand High RPM runnings.
The cams are profiled for top end, as opposed to low end Torque.
The Head gaskets and Freeze plugs are usually brass to guard
against salt water corrosion, And the intake system uses
Air Arrestors for air filters. Distributors have arrestors also.
This is to prevent sparks.

A marine 460 will have the truck/CJ rods. They will have a cast crank not steel. The marine cam is designed for low to mid RPM HP and torque usage...a more radical cam will draw water into the exhaust ports causing engine damage. Most marine engines other than outboards are designed to run a maximum of 4,400-4,800 RPM for extended periods under high loads. They do use brass freeze plugs and will have brass in other critical areas to help prevent corrosion. I believe the Mericruiser 460's are rated at 335 HP.

I'm not sure the specific times that they were used, but some marine engines are reverse rotation. That's no big deal, only have to change the cam and distributor to switch back to normal rotation.
