Reduce heat and underhood temp for gains?
 
Many moons ago (pre 2000), I would get shaved with a straight razor by an old Italian barber. Of course the place was packed with senior citizens, so I would grab whatever was around to read. I picked up an issue of Petersen's Four-Wheeler magazine (I am not 100% sure on this as the CORRECT magazine) and found an interesting article.

Basically, the story went on about how reducing the underhood tempeture by redudant fans, synthetic fluids and oils, combined with a Space Age heat wrap allowed the staff to see respectable gains for a couple hundred bucks or more.

The truck was some type of Ford Custom which existed before the excursions came out or even Expeditions did. So some aftermarket coachwork seemed to make them up to keep the Ford-groupies from buying GM subrubans. The truck was a crew cab pickup front with a grafted back end of a large style Bronco with dual wheels. Anyone ever see one of these or know what I am going on about?

Anyhow it was a 4x4 with a 460EFI motor and Automatic tranny (maybe with OD on it). They did the mods and detailed them and took the beat from 8mpg to 13mpg and added about 80hp if I am remembering right. They made specific note that they did nothing with the ignition, nor exhaust and in theory, this should show greater gains on any type of diesel. I also believe they showed hom much of the underhood temp was lowered before and after to contribute/cause this by a hand held heat registering gun.


Anyone ever see that issue? The only reason I asked is it looked very simple to do. I do believe the truck was white and the magazine was in the mid to late 90s.

Too good to be true. The amount of gain, that it. Some is likely, but an over 50% increase?!?

It was done, but has anyone seen it or have issues of that magazine that are old? If it wasn't Petersen's 4wheeler. What common 4x4 mags were doing buildups back in the day (era 95-2000)?

Check out Nansulate you can paint it on your house to insulate it, your car engine
parts to insulate them think intake to keep heat out, exhaust to keep heat in, the
floor boards to keep the interior cooler=less ac runtime which all could add up to
reduce fuel use. It is still a bit rich for my blood but if it could increase your mileage
and power and I saw some numbers from a trusted source, I might think about it.
Using it on the southern exposure here in Fla could reduce your Ac bill and that could
pay for it's self pretty quickly.
